Jennifer | 229 comments I have never read a Stephen King and what something scary for Halloween reading. Any suggestions?

message 2: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Petrocelli Pet Semetary. VERY good scary book, and perfect for Halloween.

That said, some of King's truly scariest works are short stories. Be sure to check out "The Raft" (I think it's in the Skeleton Crew book) and "Man in the Black Suit" in the "Everything's Eventual" collection. Your heart rate will actually increase. Soooo good.

It takes real talent to put something in print so suspenseful and thrilling that I am actually creeped out. King has that talent.

Sherin Punnilath (shery_7) | 3158 comments The Talisman is pretty creepy.
Didn't like it much though ..

message 4: by Viola (new)

Viola | 1014 comments I've read It and The Shining. Both very scary, although long.

message 5: by Regine (last edited Oct 09, 2013 11:55PM) (new)

Regine The Shining is fantastically terrifying. Although, I do agree with Mandy. Some of Stephen King's short stories are his scariest. The Monkey from the Skeleton Crew kept me up for nights!

I remember watching a documentary about Stephen King. Apparently, he scared himself so badly while he was writing Pet Sematary that he actually had to put it away for several months before working on it again.

I am going to have to agree with Viola, for me it is hands down between It and The Shining, the Pet Semetary also had me sleeping with the lights on

message 7: by Marcia (new)

Marcia (marcygold) I have read many of King's novels, and my all time favorite is The Stand followed closely by 11/22/63 (which is not a scary story.) Both of these books are really long though... i have read most of his stories as richard bachman and they are all pretty scary. I prefer the scare of a more psychological thriller like Misery and Delores Claiborne. Cujo is also really good and scary!

Therese Vannier (theresevannier) So many good ones. Stand by me. It. Shining.

Gerald's Game was the scariest for me but it could just be my cleithrophobia setting in. The entire story was suspenseful and creepy.
It's about a woman who is trapped in the weirdest of ways with little hope for a rescue. Her imagination takes over. I found it odd that he dedicated the book with love and admiration to his wife, Tabitha and her sisters. Did anyone else read this book?

message 9: by Janine (new)

Janine | 4 comments I'd say It (I refuse to watch the movie because the book scared me) and The Shining. I actually threw the book across the room when the phone rang!

message 10: by Colleen (last edited Dec 05, 2013 07:31PM) (new)

Colleen I haven't read any of his newer stuff, but I read some 20 years ago. One of the later ones Lisey's Story I didn't care for. I just re?read 'Salem's Lot. I want to read the shining and doctor sleep now.

"all work and no play makes jack a bull doy."

Dee | 83 comments Salem's Lot and Misery. I'm getting scared just thinking about them.

I would agree though, his short stories are the worst/best.

message 13: by Cathi (new)

Cathi (cath_n) Hmmm...haven't read all of them but I would say The Shining and Misery.

message 14: by Roberta (new)

Roberta Pearce (robertapearce) | 31 comments The first [yes, first] time I read The Stand, it was late-June and I was coming down with a summer cold -which upped the terror nicely as I half-convinced myself I was one of the superflu victims. So, I pick The Stand hands down as the scariest. It was also my first Stephen King, so while I've enjoyed his other novels, nothing can top that experience for me.

I loved The Shining. I thought it was better than the movie!

message 16: by Nancy (Colorado) (new)

Nancy (Colorado) The book It caused me to stop reading his books for awhile.

I'm not sure I want to read it then! haha

Misty Reviving another really old thread, but I love Stephen King! I've read nearly 40 of his books, and I would say that It is by far his scariest. It is the only one that had me jumping at shadows.

Therese - I read Gerald's Game, and it is totally creepy!

I also agree with people who say his short stories can be very scary. There are some freaky ones in Night Shift.

Fun to revive some of these old threads! I have not read a lot of Stephen King, but of those I have the scariest for me was Pet Semetary, followed by some of the stories in Night Shift.

message 20: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 4853 comments I found Pet Semetary more disgusting than any of his books.
Have read The Green Mile and The Shining - both eerily scary.
Planning to read It.

message 21: by Jane (new)

Jane (shoxford) | 39 comments I've read all of Stephen King's books and the only one I can't re-read is It.

It is one of the scariest books I've ever read.
