Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hello, bookish friends!

In line with the activities of the 2013 Filipino ReaderCon, we'd like to ask you to list down the books that you would recommend to your friends. Everyone's inputs will be compiled into one big list of 50 or so books. Our group will use this list of books at the Book Recommendation Fair.

So how does it work? We have ten categories of books that will make up our list. List down five books that you think belong to each category. Take note of the following:

-Books per category will be ranked. List your books in order. Books that are placed on the first spot of every category will receive 5 points. Books that are placed on the fifth spot of every category will receive 1 point.

-Follow this format (no need to create links):
[Category Name]:
1. [Book Title] by [First Name Last Name]
2. [Book Title] by [First Name Last Name]
etc.

-You may list less than five books per category. You may not list more than five books per category. Books that are placed on the spots higher than the fifth will be disregarded.

-If there are ties on your lists, place them on the same spot. However, the total number of books per category will still be five. In addition, the points for the tied books will be divided equally.

-You may skip some categories, in case you feel you cannot make recommendations for them.

-If you need to make changes, edit your message instead of adding a new one.

-If ties for the fifth spot of each category are found during the compilation, the Goodreads average rating of the books will be used as the tiebreaker.

-Each book must appear in only one category. If a book is found in multiple categories, the points for it will be totaled and the Mods will decide where to place it (probably place it on the category where it garnered the highest points).

-Feel free to ask questions, but no troll comments, please. -> Malungkot pala kapag walang trolls, hahaha!

-Please make sure that you have read or are currently reading the books that you are recommending. We wouldn't want to make a recommendation of recommendations, right? We will not bother to check your Goodreads shelves. We trust that you will do good with your judgment.

-Complete your lists by October 20 (Hi Mods, I need an extension, hehe).

-Below are the categories finalized by the Mods. If you are confused on how to categorize the books, please follow the guidelines per category. We are not going to be super strict on categorization, but please use sound judgment when coming up with your lists. Make your votes count. Thanks! :)

message 10: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hi Miss Ronnie! No questions would be asked if you had, for example, infinite feels for American Psycho. Your judgment is the sole qualifying factor. (And I fear that this would give me a headache later. :D)

However, I do have to remind you of a few strikes. Please take note of this:

-If there are ties on your lists, place them on the same spot. However, the total number of books per category will still be five. In addition, the points for the tied books will be divided equally.

So either you edit the categories with more than five books or we'll just disregard the excess books.

Regarding your question, we will not check your Goodreads shelves. It's too tedious and we need to work! We will summon the honor system. I will amend the notes above with these guidelines. Thanks!

Oh ok

Is it alright that I listed down whole series, not individual books?

message 15: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments ^Hi, I think that's okay. If the reader really feels that he or she should recommend the whole series, or only the second book of a trilogy, I think the recommendation should count (although medyo stressful sa compilation and vote counting, haha).

message 21: by Aaron Vincent (last edited Oct 10, 2013 11:10PM) (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I think the recommendation lists would be a lot more useful if we include books that are a bit less known and not on usual or standard reading list. Let's remember that these are readers we are recommending books to so I think it's safe to assume they already read books like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Narnia even before they read and watched Game of Thrones for the GoT Hangover list or Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, John Green books for Forever Young.

I think the point should be to create our own recommendation list and not replicate what is everybody's recommendation list. Two cents lang. :)

With that said, my recommendation lists:

U GoT Hangover? [morally ambiguous, grimdark epic fantasy and science fiction]
1. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
2. Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay
3. The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett
4. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
5. Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis

I so want to veto Lord of the Rings. That is like, standard knowledge. Including it on a recommendation list is akin to committing a recommendation lists faux pas. Just an opinion. :p

Forever Young [this is such a broad category so I'm only listing books that will make you feel the invincibility and exhilaration that comes with youth or make you feel nostalgic of that age.]
1. Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen
2. Among Others by Jo Walton
3. Happyface by Stephen Emond
4. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart
5. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta

Tome Raiders
1. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanne Clarke
2. The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie
3. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon

It's more fun in the Philippines
1. Alternative Alamat Edited by Paolo Chikiamco

The Laslas Fanatics
1. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
2. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
3. We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

Literary Hippies: A Beginner's Guide
1. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

Infinite F88ls
1. Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Enduring Classics
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

LOL! LMAO! ROTFL!
1. Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
2. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby

message 23: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hi Aaron, thanks for the 2 cents. Will that buy me a drink? LOL. Oh, the strategic votes are going to give me a headache during the tabulation, so you need to buy me a real drink. >:)

Voters, you may consider Aaron's opinion on this matter. He has a very fine point. You may choose to veto certain books on your own discretion (e.g., To Kill a Mockingbird), and nobody would question you.

(And I wouldn't veto LOTR just because I haven't read a lot of GoT-ish books. Heck, I haven't even watched a GoT episode, hahaha!)

But at the end of it, it's still your call. Just vote wisely. Vote what you really want to recommend to the general reading public. Vote from the heart. And vote strategically, if you are so inclined. ;)

message 24: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments I have a proposal for you Angus.

Will you --

Haha joke lang. :D Anyway, since we are also still going to give away the TFG 100 list, maybe the books that are already there can be excluded in these new lists when we tabulate/finalize these lists? Idea lang, para we have more variety of books in these new ones, as Aaron mentioned. :)

That's another 2 cents. So may 4 cents ka na to buy a drink. :P

message 25: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I am really, really against Lord of the Rings and Narnia on the GoT list. GoT became a hit because it didn't follow the rules of the more traditional fantasy novels which those two books mentioned are classified as. Nothing wrong with those books but it just defeats the purpose of an "epic fantasy in the vein of Game of Thrones RECOMMENDATION list". Even if you haven't read Lord of the Rings, it is still not a recommedation. It's more of a reiteration or reminder, really.

message 26: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hmm. If we are going to give away copies of the TFG 100 list, I am fine with it. But maybe we should check the numbers once all the votes are in. I mean, it would be unfair to exclude a book because of its ridiculous popularity. I know we get tired of seeing Austen in a Classics list, but there's a reason why it keeps appearing. And I think it is quite a debatable move, lalo pa't may mga tabulated votes na.

Or how about we set up a volunteer committee regarding this matter? Finalizing of the reco list will be after the October F2F, if you agree to have this committee. (Actually, naghuhugas kamay lang ako, hahaha. I don't want it to be my job to slash the books.)

message 27: by Tina (last edited Oct 10, 2013 10:36PM) (new)

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Angus: Well we can decide after the lists are compiled naman :) Like if there's really no choice but Austen, then we don't have to remove it. :D But the thing about GoT - Aaron has a point there. An alternative for the LOTR/Narnia/HP books for that is...we can just create another list for Fantasy titles?

Volunteer committee - if after F2F pa, baka kulangin tayo ng time to make the printable versions of the lists for the ReaderCon. We can discuss amongst ourselves na lang after we have finished compiling siguro? And we (me and Aaron -- OO KASAMA KA :P) can take the job of slashing books if kelangan. :)

But let's get the votes in first, then we decide after. :D

message 28: by Aaron Vincent (last edited Oct 10, 2013 10:44PM) (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I think we should define what's our goal for creating this lists. Is it to create a definitive top 5 lists on each category just like those 1000 Books You Should Read Before You Die, 500 lists, etc., or bring attention to lesser known or new books under each of those category? What do we want those people who get a copy of lists think? "Oh, I read this, I read that, heard about that, too. This lists is very definitive." OR "Hey, this book sounds good. I'm adding it on my wishlist." Me thinks one is playing it safe, the other is playing a devil, adding books to those never-ending to-read piles. Yun lang. *throws twenty pesos* :))

message 30: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Okay, if you need a qualification for eliminating a book from the recommendation lists, I can propose one:

Books with more than 500,000 ratings here on goodreads is eliminated. Exception on Enduring Classics category.

message 31: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Tina: Got it. I imagined that we would take our time under U GoT Hangover? because it looks like that list should be really considered (specific much?). The subjective ones (e.g. laslas and feels) are easier to manage, while the fixed ones (e.g. translations and tomes) need almost no scrutiny.

Aaron: You have a strike. Please read the note above and below:

-Each book must appear in only one category. If a book is found in multiple categories, the points for it will be totaled and the Mods will decide where to place it (probably place it on the category where it garnered the highest points).

What I meant in the second sentence can be illustrated this way:

Angus put Mockingbird under Enduring Classics, rank 3.
Questian put Mockingbird under Lit Hippies, rank 1.
Tina put Mockingbird under Forever Young, rank 5.

Mockingbird will receive all the corresponding points (9 points). Then we decide where to place it.

I almost missed this, hehe. Sorry, but you have to replot your strategy. :P

Cary: I won't put in your votes yet because of your disclaimer. Will wait until you finalize your list.

Thanks for the votes, Questian and Benny. Will post current leaders once more votes come in. :)

message 32: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Hey, that rule wasn't clear! Daya oh. :p Okay, will wait until the 19th so I can put books on categories where it will matter. Hehe. Just in case you won't allow me to veto LoTR, Narnia and Harry Potter (view spoiler), I'll place my books on Tomes because it looks like nobody's that interested on voting on that category. #strategy

Funny you used To Kill a Mockingbird as an example. That one should be vetoed, too. :p

message 35: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Aaron, honest! That's what I meant. Hindi ko hinanapan ng butas (insert evil laugh right HERE). But I swear that I would have missed it kung isa lang ang duplicate. So this would make me more vigilant now in tabulating the votes.

I have Php 20.04. I need a tin can. And I'm glad the irony on Mockingbird is not missed. :D

Re: Our goal. I think we focused on a general objective: to create a list of categorized recommendations through votes. And then wala na. Hahaha! But we'll figure it out. I think the lists are hopeful naman. It's just that may mga books talaga na pundasyon na talaga. Mahirap tibagin!

And LOL! will be our dark horse, I think. The votes from that category are diverse.

Buddy: Yes, sorry naman! I'll put your votes in na. :D

message 41: by Ranee (new)

Ranee | 1902 comments here's my 6 cents (to make a peso out of your 4 cents)
Agree with Aaron with having new recommendations. Given that the list would generally have the word "Fresh" affixed before the word "Recommendations". But I think that would most likely fall under the U Got Hangover category. As the title suggests, the expected crowd we like to recommend these books falls under the readers who have read (or maybe watched) GoT and might be readers who knows their Scifi/Fantasy already.

the other categories are a bit safe, I think. We cannot remove a classic book from its category because generally the classics we have read would be the same books required to us to read in high school. The goal of this category then is to reiterate to the reader to revisit/reread these classics now that they are more matured to aptly feel why this book is recommended as "Enduring". I think this is the same for the category Forever Young. It is a list that brings out the best memories in our childhood or deemed most related to our teen years.
