Jesse's Apartment

Diana walked with Jesse to his apartment at a slow pace, relieved that he seemed to be slowing his own pace a little as well. She stopped when he did, looking up at the building. "Nice," she said, smiling. After making sure she had her pills with her in her pocket, she headed inside with Jesse. "Thanks for letting me come over... It's really nice of you."
Diana looked around, loving how simple everything was. Nothing like where she came from, no fanciness to hide behind. "It's really nice," she said, coughing a little. "Did you do it all yourself? I always wanted a place of my own. Must be pretty liberating." It was something she knew she'd never feel, but if even being here came close then it was worth it.
Diana sat down beside Jesse, taking the remote and flipping to a crime show she used to watch. "This okay with you?" She yawned, feeling tired after days with no sleep. If she didn't take her pills now there would be trouble later. "Would you mind showing me where the glasses are in the kitchen? I um... I need to take my meds before I forget."
Diana got up and followed him to stand in the doorway of the kitchen, thanking him for the water. She pulled out the small container from her back pocket, popping two of the tiny white tablets in her mouth and washing them down with a gulp of the water. Setting the glass in the sink, Diana leaned back against the counter, waiting expectantly for Jesse to ask her questions about something or the other. He deserved an explanation, but he didn't seem to want to pry. She simply waited for him to either talk to her or head back to the living room.
Diana smiled a little, going back to sit next to him on the couch. She barely payed attention to the episode, her eyelids having a hard time staying open. Leaning back, she closed her eyes, not having felt so relaxed in a long time. "Thank you," she mumbled, not sure what she was thanking him for this time.
Diana muttered something under her breath and moved to lay down, not waiting for Jesse to get up and ending up leaning against him awkwardly. The meds made her drowsy, and this was just the result of that. Diana fell asleep quickly, mumbling unintelligibly.
Diana's breathing was hard and labored, but she slept soundly all the same. She felt warm, although somewhere in her mind she knew she was still on the couch. Falling asleep was better than the alternative, at least. It would be ideal if she made it a day or two without passing our, not to mention the embarrassment it would save her. Diana shifted after a while, curling her legs underneath her on the couch.
Diana wrapped an arm around Jesse in her sleep, moving closer as he shifted her. She stirred slightly after around half an hour, her eyes staying closed. "Theo?" She asked groggily, not knowing of anyone else who would stick around while she slept. He was sometimes too concerned to leave her alone, and Diana assumed she was at home. "Are our parents home yet?" She mumbled, snuggling closer.
Diana sat up slowly, blinking against the light at Jesse. Her cheeks reddened as she realized how she had acted towards him while completely unaware of her actions. "Ohmygod, I'm so sorry... I thought you were my brother. I didn't mean to... Uh, sorry..." She was flustered, her breaths even shorter than usual. Diana stood up, stumbling immediately because of the light-headed feeling that had settled in.
Diana gripped one of his arms to steady herself, working through each breath carefully and trying to fight off the faint feeling in her legs. "I can't..." She fought for more breath, knowing her body would shut down soon. Diana let go of him, hurrying as best she could into the kitchen. Maybe he'd stay away until she woke up again. Diana lost consciousness as soon as she passed the doorway, landing on the floor. It had happened more frequently these days, and she knew it wasn't a coincidence.
Diana's breathing stabilized after a while. She woke up once again surrounded by Jesse. It seemed to have become a habit of hers. She didn't move out of his lap and instead stared up at him blankly. "I'm sorry. I'll leave now, I promise. I told you you'd regret it." Diana shut her eyes, turning away from him. Everyone thought she was a freak once they saw her like this. It was better that way for them, she knew, but it hurt all the same.
Diana covered his hand with hers, keeping it still. He didn't understand, but now she had to tell him. It wouldn't be fair. Looking up at him, she spoke quietly. "I would really like to be with you, but I can't and I need to explain what you're getting into. My mother was a drug addict, and she smoked marijuana constantly while she was pregnant with me. My lungs can only sustain for at most two more years, probably less. If you end up in a relationship with me, or whatever it would be, I'd be gone before you know it."
Diana squeezed his hand slightly, giving him a sad look. "But that's just it. It's not a risk. I'm dying, and there's nothing to do to stop it. Two years at most, and then I'll be gone." She was so used to speaking of it by now that the words came easily.
Diana nodded mutely, unable to believe that he was willing to do this. She smiled a little watching him play with her hair. Most people thought it was dyed, but then a lot of the things about her seemed fake to people. Diana wrapped her arms around his neck, sitting up and hugging him innocently. "I think I'm just going to have to say yes this one time."
Diana sat quietly, watching Jesse as he traced the lines of her palms. No one had ever held her like this, probably just because she had never let them. Whatever comfort she had gotten from the words of her brother paled in comparison to this. It felt good for once to be able to allow herself to have what she wanted, if only for a little while. Her fingers interlocked with his and Diana stared down at their hands. "I wish I could just stay here. You know I do have to get back sometime though." She wasn't sure whether he would want to go back with her, but Theo would be worrying himself over her by now.
Diana shrugged. "Soon, probably... If you'd like, you're welcome to stay over for a while. You can meet Theo that way." She smiled, positive that Theo would approve of him. As long as Diana was happy, he usually approved of anything. "If you're okay with the walk, of course... It's not too far."
Diana stood reluctantly, shrugging. "I'll be okay, I think. And they're not my family. The Roses aren't home anyways, and Theo's adopted too. He's the closest thing to family I have, I guess. Of course, you don't have to meet him if you don't want to."
"I don't know," Diana admitted. "They were at a conference when the attacks started, and we haven't heard from them since. I'm not sure if they're..." She shrugged, turning for the door. "Um... Are you ready to go?"
Diana shook her head, walking out with him. "No, it's fine. Either they decided to leave us behind or they're dead. It's the truth." She forced a smile, as if she were okay with that reality, and headed in the direction of the estate.
