Ashley Wright Journal Submission 1 This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen Chapters 1-5 Pages 1-91 Madisen and Stephanie Monday, October 7, 2013, 7:30 p.m. Journal Part 1: I wonder why Remy won’t give Dexter a chance. Whenever he comes up to talk to her she disdains him in a way. She’s always cold towards him and just won’t give him the time of day. In chapter 3 the author has Remy and her friends go to a bar and have some drinks and to just have fun. Remy and her friends are 18, why are they going to a bar? Dessen has them showing the bouncer fake I.D.’s and drinking beer throughout the night. Isn’t that a bad thing to write about when there are teenage girls reading this book? This book starts out with Remy saying that her mom is on marriage number 5. Up until chapter 4, Remy is basically planning the wedding by herself. I wonder if her mom and Don will actually stay married, or if her mom will eventually be on marriage number 6. Why can’t her mom just be happy with being single and writing novels? Obviously she isn’t that great with relationships. Remy and her friends are going to be leaving for college soon. We know that Remy is going to Stanford but Dessen hasn’t said yet where her friends are going. I wonder what will happen to the friendships. Based on my personal experience, I’ve only kept in contact with a handful of my friends from high school. Maybe they’ll stay friends forever? Or will they drift apart? While Remy and her friends are at the bar that one night, Remy tells her friends that she is going to break up with her boyfriend Jonathon. She ends up finding a pair of underwear in his bed that aren’t hers and end up calling it quits. After that, Jonathon hasn’t been mentioned, but I wonder if he finds a way back into Remy’s life. Maybe once she leaves for college? As much as Remy seems to hate Dexter, I think they will end up together. She just needs to let her guard down and be a little nice to him. I also predict that Dexter will follow Remy to college. He already is so candid with his feelings towards her that it wouldn’t surprise me if he chases her to Stanford. I got confused when the author had Adam break up with Remy’s friend Chloe the night they were all at the bar. She was melancholy about it, but it just came out of no where. Journal 1 Part 2: The time went quickly because I was sucked into the book. I looked at the clock and suddenly an hour and a half had already passed. I felt very exuberant about what I was reading. I lost track of my reading because I started to think about everything else I had to do today when I got home. Parts of the book seemed frivolous and I ended up thinking about other things. What I did to try and improve my comprehension was to not think about my other “chores” and just focus on what was going on in the book. I didn’t want my thoughts to have high attrition to my reading.
Ashley, I am glad that you are enjoying your book. It's a great feeling when you get completely immersed in a book. Nice job w/this but please check length b/c this looks short. Be sure it is required length.
