It would be Carrie. I didn't really think it was that scary when we were in the theater, but I had nightmares for days afterward!

For me the book that really scared me was Dean Koontz Phantoms. Granted I was only 11 when I read it and normally read at night right before bed! As for movies the only one that I can think of right now is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It was more of the whole 3am thing that freaked me out b/c at that time i was having trouble sleeping and that was when i would wake up!
The book that scared me was Pet Sematary. There is a particular scene in that book that was somewhat similar to something I experienced when I was a kid. I was only 5 at the time and the memory is just as vivid today as it was then. I still have nightmares about every now and again 48 years later.
I agree about Pet Sematary. Scared me along with Amnityville Horror (the Book). All of early King books scared me (probobly through Cujo)
As far as movies, Nightmere on Elmstreet, when it first came out, scared me.(after the first time, it isnt so scary, even hokey)
The Ring (Movie) scared me.
Event Horizon scared me.
Hanabal just grossed me out so bad I lost taste for gore for a while. (eating his own brains--ewwwww).
When I was in high school, I read IT. The part where the nice old woman slowly changes into a monster still gives me the creeps!
Ok I couldn't remember what scared me as a child because I was a bigtime horror movie fan but with the passing of MJ I remembered being so scared when the camera panned around and showed MJ was a zombie in Thriller. My cousin and I screamed and than started doing our MJ dances.

I couldn't sleep for over a week after I saw The Ring. That girl coming out of the tv scared the crap out of me.
Hi there! I'm a new member. Zombies have always manages to fascinate and terrify me. So pretty much any book or movie that involves them. Yes, Thriller got to me too when I was little, lol.
Movies that scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
IT
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Cujo
Poltergeist
The Exorcist
Night of the Demons
Event Horizon
Pet Sematary
Labyrinth
Troll
Amityville 4 (the one with the lamp, lol)
The Grudge
Books
The Dreamcatcher
Nightshift
A book about a haunted house, that really messes up the family that moves into it. There's a psychic medium who tries to help the wife, who is followed around by the ghosts she has "exorcised" in the past. No one gets out of this book sane. Wish I could remember the title or the author. What got to me were the ghosts that followed the psychic around.
If anyone knows what book I am talking about, please tell me! That book was crazy. And I grew up reading Stephen King novels and watching horror movies.

Welcome! I had totally forgotten about Pet Sematary and Poltergeist. I would get scared everytime the tv went out and had the static on it!

A movie I saw as a kid that scared the heck out of me was Hush Sweet Charlotte ( not sure thats the exact name). It was about a psycho murdering lady. Its blurry, I think I should look for it. It is black and white and a really big star ( the one Mommy Dearest is about) was in it. I actually thought candyman was kind of spooky too. Its the concept. Didn't you used to tell those type tales when you were a kid.
Stephanie wrote: "IT scared the crap out of me as a kid. As an adult, anything bad happening to my kids terrifies me."The kid thing is what freaked me out about Pet Cemetary and now that I think on it the original Children of the Corn.

The thing about PET SEMATARY that got me was at the little boy's funeral when the dad & the grandfather got in a fight. I had an experience that was along that line at my aunt's funeral when I was 5. Except it didn't happen at the funeral home and was a bit more jarring than even that scene was.
I just remembered another very important movie. Jaws! One of my favorite movies of all time, but I think it might be the reason why I am terrified of dark water, lol. It definitely scared me when I was a kid.
Any movie that has a creepy kid in it freaks me out. Something about a child being evil scares the crap out of me! Brrrr.

Yes! That kid in The Grudge was creepy. So was that girl in The Ring and all of the kids in Children of the Corn. Come to think of it, there are a lot of movies with evil children in them. Guess we aren't the only ones who think it's scary.
When I was about 3 years old my parents took me to a drive in movie theater. They were having a horror movie festival. I remember a movie playing about a killer alligator. I screamed the whole movie and was terrified of alligators for a long time. The book IT by Stephen King scared me the most. I remember reading it as a teenager and sleeping with the lights on for a few days.
Chrissy315 wrote: "When I was about 3 years old my parents took me to a drive in movie theater. They were having a horror movie festival. I remember a movie playing about a killer alligator. Another movie that really got to me when I was a kid was Critters.
Quarantine scared me silly. The way the things moved all freaky fast, the personal shooting style, and the flesh eating gave me nightmares for weeks
I have avoided watching that one, because any horror movie that's based on a contagious disease is just too much for me. I love horror movies in general, though.
The one movie that still scares me to this day is "The Exorcist." Especially the director's cut. I remember when this film was released in the theaters, and people were fainting, and vomiting during the film. The only author's writing which scares me is H. P. Lovecraft.
Hum, the Frank Langella Dracula The scene at the beginning of the movie right after the ship smashes onto the shores of England. There is a storm going on, and you are in Mina's bedroom. There's a flash of lightning, and there Dracula is, hanging upside down outside Mina's bedroom window. Totally scary at the time. I recently got to re-watch the movie and it didn't seem as scarey this time (maybe because I was expecting it.)And, speaking of Dracula--don't EVER read the book in the middle of the night... while babysitting ....in the mountains of Greece...and have the people you are babysitting for NOT come home when they are due... and, when you call for someone to go find them.....have their deserted car found, but no sign of THEM. Yeah, really happened. I wasn't able to read Dracula again for about 15 years. (Someone had syphoned almost all their gas out of their car and they'd had to hike back down the mountain to find help)
And yeah--the shark in the Jaws movie--TOTALLY scarey. Um, and dark water isn't all they need. Bull sharks (which are more dangerous than Great Whites) have been seen in 3 feet of water--AND up to 600 miles up rivers, so they aren't confined to salt water. (Can we all tell that I watch WAY too much Animal Planet?)
ANYTHING with spiders. I have serious arachnaphobia.
The original versions of Village of the Damned and Children of the Damned . Those were 2 seriously scarey movies.
The book The Day of the Triffids and the BBC filmed version. The 1959 movie version made in the U.S. was a laugh. I think what was so scarey about it was--it was something that, based on what we know of science really COULD happen.
For movies I'd have to say The Exocism of Emily Rose. For books I'd say either Dragon Tears by Dean Koontz or The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong.
Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "Anne, I'm with you on the evil children. Can't handle that."I know, right? Something about evil kids just freaks me out!
'Cause it's just wrong. Kids are so innocent. They just should not be evil!Imagine the poor lady in The Omen. Or the father, knowing he should kill his child. Argh!
Exactly! They should be rotten, but not evil! Maybe it's that weird intelligence that the spooky kids have. Like they understand things that they shouldn't. I feel for the dad in The Omen. No way I could kill one of my kids...even if they were the antichrist!
That's true about the knowing that kids have. It's interesting when I go shopping and kids (very young todder age) will make eye contact with me. They look so serious, like they're trying to figure you out. If you smile, then they tend to relax. You can see those gears turning in their heads.I have asked myself the child is the antichrist question many times. That is a difficult decision no parent should have to make.
ok, for a totally different take on the Child as Anti-Christ you need to read the Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman book Good Omens. Its a total scream (in the funny sense, not the scarey sense.) I really DID love this book.
I loved Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, Ann! You're right, it's a different take on the evil Anti-Christ.
