Are any of you Otherkin or Therian? I include sang and psy vamp in there, but don't take offense as some do.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is/are Otherkin and Therian?

Otherkin and Therians are people who believe their souls are not human.

Otherkin are primarily 'mythical' creatures and Therians are animals.

Dragonkin would be those who believe their souls are that of dragons, ect.

Wolf-Therians believe their souls are that of a wolf (a werewolf, if you will)

Sanguine vampires and Psychic vampires are catigorized as otherkin though some of them find offence to that.

I don't know if I would really consider myself Otherkin, but I do feel a connection of sorts to manticores, as you might be able to tell from my icon.

Vampires are different. Therians and otherkin (like I said "Sanguine vampires and Psychic vampires are categorized as otherkin though some of them find offence to that") fall under that soul identification characterization, vampires do not. Vampires are people who lack the ability to retain or create life energy (prana) so they have to feed from outside sources. Psy vamps feed off psychic energy, and sang vamps feed off blood (a direct tap to that prana). Some vampires are also Therian and/or Otherkin, but not all. Most believe they have a human soul.

A few individuals argue that there is such a thing as a vampire otherkin and that their souls are that of a vampire archetype, but not many people believe this. It all depends on your theory of why Otherkin exist, and everyone has their own pet theory. In some, this vampire otherkin is plausible...In others, its not.

There are a lot of pretenders in the community (especially in the vampire sect, thanks to the rise in pop culture romanticizing of vampires) but being otherkin is more than having an affinity for an animal or creature. True therians and otherkin have a variety of symptoms that differentiate them from the role players.

They have astral, sometimes ethric, bodies of their ‘true’ selves. If one were, say, a wolf-therian one would have a phantom tail and ears. They can feel these just like a person who has a leg amputated can still feel their missing leg, and many reports of children being able to see these phantom limbs (as they are called) have been given. They are also prone to shifting. I’ll save you the vocabulary lesson of these shifts, as it’s unnecessary, but there are mental shifts where one (staying with the classic wolf example) will have the mental state of a wolf. They wont start going down on all fours and begin barking, but will have the perception or mental state that a wolf might. There are also personality shifts where one might take on the traits of the wolf. Sense shifting can give them better hearing and smell. The list goes on and on. There is also the phenomenon of bi-location where one’s physical body and astral body are in different places, like astral travel. The community rejects the idea that p-shifting (physically shifting like a werewolf of classic lore) is impossible but a few believe it is possible, even fewer claim to have done it (and are ridiculed for it).

This may all seem far fetched but some of the theories are sound. And in a lot of werewolf tradition, the lyke wouldn’t physically shift into a wolf and attack people but that they would be found prone (as if sleeping) and they sent out a soul-like phantom within themselves to attack and run amuck. This is, of course, bi-locating.

I could go on and on, but I’m already being boring, I’m sure.

A really good book I just finished is The Magic of Shapeshifting by Rosalyn Greene. Really good reference on the different types of shifting from dream/astral to physical. She touches on the Otherkin, too.

Ya, that was a good book. I enjoyed her opinions on p-shifting.

I find the idea of running on all fours, or flying, almost second nature. I also find that when I'm attracted to someone, my first urge is to bite them.

I've heard of the term 'Otherkin' but still not sure what it is. Is it a Wiccan thing that I haven't caught onto yet?

It's not a religious term, so no. It's basically just identifying as a non-human.

I do know of some Wiccans who identify as Otherkin, though, and at least one tigerkin heathen.

Huh. So is it like identifying as/with your spirit animal or is it literally identifying as an animal?
