why is it important to just write and not edit when you are first writing a novel, or story?

Do you ever brainstorm before you write?

Yes, I always write down notes, and important events that I plan on putting in the story, before starting to write. However, i try not to go into too much details, everything is just pretty much an outline of how the story starts, major events that occurs, and how it might end.
