In the second book the danger is greater so a stronger spell is need by Rose and Lilly to protect them.
they use
violet, thistle, honeysuckle, and fennel.
Small bottles of Patchouli, Lavender, Mugwort and Hyssop oil.
Small pieces of old sharp iron
to make the spell as well as magic

there are different types of protection spells in all three books. all use different things,
simple ones for everyday protection. Complex one for keeping the crow men away and one for helping in time travel
