Please discuss His Last Bow. Remember if you are talking about specific stories to label which one(s) you are referring to. Thanks. :)

Leslie Just started this today. I found the first story, The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, a bit more "yucky" that I typically expect with Sherlock Holmes.

Leslie I have finished this collection of short stories, which I found to be slightly darker than the previous short story collections. I did like it better than The Valley of Fear, so I guess I will persevere and read the last collection to finish off my The Complete Sherlock Holmes.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments I think my set is out of order from others. I think there is a story I missed somewhere, too, that some versions of "Memoirs" have and some don't. The first story in "His Last Bow" in my version is "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" which I'm not super impressed with.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments "The Cardboard Box" - I found it interesting that Holmes was able to deduce that the box was not intended for its recipient. The rest of the story was rather "meh," though.

"The Red Circle" - Again, nice twist that the swap of a woman for a man was made, but the rest was rather far-fetched.

"The Bruce-Partington Plans" - This one has been the best so far. The deductions about how and why the plans were stolen and how the body came to be where it was found were engaging moments. So sad for the young man, though.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments "The Dying Detective" - I know he was playacting, but his treatment of Watson was a bit harsh, imo. Not sure how I feel about this one.

"Disappearing of Lady Frances Carfax" - I enjoyed this one. Holmes being surprised at Lady Carfax' still being alive was amusing. The casket idea was original and clever.

"Adventure of the Devil's Foot" - I had a harder time following this one, but once again, Sherlock shows a softer heart in the end, giving out his own justice. Still not sure how I feel about that.

"His Last Bow" - One of the few stories not told in a narrative format from Dr. Watson. Short tale, not terribly original, but entertaining.

Phil (lanark) I thought it of that they put three stories in a row that involved poisoning .

Phil (lanark) I thought it odd, not I thought it of - can't edit on my phone.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments I hadn't noticed that, Phil, but you're right. It's usually more varied than that.
