Jasmine knocked on Ariel's door. It had been awhile since they had seen each other and Jasmine felt guilty for getting so busy. Ariel was still the best and really only true friend she had made at the school.
Ariel heard a knock at her door and quickly tried to dry her eyes. She really hoped that it wasn't Eric. He had been so rude to her that she didn't want to see him. She pulled open the door her eyes still red and puffy and saw Jasmine standing there.
Jasmine had been trying to manage a small smile but when she saw Ariel's puffy eyes she stopped and just pulled her into her arms. She didn't know what had happened but she was determined to be there for her whatever it was.
When Jasmine hugged her her composure broke and she began to cry again. "I'm sorry." She gasped between sobs. She pulled back and gestured to her dorm. "Wanna come in?" She asked.
Jasmine nodded. She led Ariel into the room and led her to the bed to sit down. She went to the bathroom and grabbed Ariel a tissue. When she returned she handed it to her, sat on the bed and wrapped her arms around her. "Now, tell me everything." She whispered.
Ariel took the tissue gratefully and wiped her eyes before taking a deep breath. "It's Eric." She started. "He took me on this great and romantic date but when he was taking me back here it was like he mentally pulled away from me. He told me to go on my own and he seemed so cold towards me." She said swallowing a sob. "I thought everything was going perfectly."
"Oh, sweetie I'm so sorry." Jasmine said softly. "What exactly happened was it something he sais specifically?" She really wanted to help but she was still very confused.
"No he didn't specifically say anything but it was like he was a stranger." She said trying to explain. "He took me to the lake and we danced. It was so romantic. I thought everything was going perfectly but then he pulled away from me and when he spoke it sounded so cold."
Jasmine felt anger bubble up inide of her. Ariel was such a sweet girl and the idea of anyone hurting her was unacceptable. "Oh, have you tried to talk to him since? Are you going to try again?" Jasmine paused to let her answer.
Ariel shook her head. "He hasn't tried to see me since last night and hasn't called me either. I'm not sure if I want to talk to him." She said even though the thought of not seeing him made her heart hurt. "And you know what the worst part is?"
This was good for her, to talk about it. It never did any good to keep things bottled up. "What's the worst part?" she asked.
"I think I love him. I may never know now though because of the way he treated me. I don't think I could be with someone like that." She said a sob building in her chest. "But the thought of not being with him... It's inconceivable."
Jasmine felt her own heart break seeing her friend, her best friend, this way. "Hey, once you and he have both had some time to cool down we'll go talk to him together, Okay?"
Ariel looked at her gratefully. "I would like that." She said. She wiped her eyes again. "So what have you been up to since the last time I saw you?" She asked changing the subject.
"It's settled then." she said with a small smile. "Oh, nothing much. I got desperately behing in my studies." She groanded. "Did you know that it's possible to fail art?"
Ariel laughed. "You failed art?" She asked. "How is that possible? I couldn't imagine failing art." She was grateful for the change in the subject and felt lighter already.
"You fail art by turning in a blank page and saying it's open for interpretation." Jasmine laughed. It haed been mortifying turning in that assignement. "I need help." She whined.
"I can help you." Ariel offered. He loved art and was pretty good at it. "Oh! Did you want to see my drawings like I promised to show you?"
"I was sort of hoping you would offer." she giggled. Then her eyes lit up. "I would love to see them, every single one." She agreed happily.
Ariel smiled. She got up and went over to her desk grabbing her sketchbook. She faltered a little when she saw that it was open to a picture of Eric but she straightened and walked back over to Jasmine.
Jasmine watched Ariel walk away sadly. it was impossibleiy fair that this guy was her first taste of human boys. That already she had gotten her heart broken.
She sat back down and flipped to the beginning of the book. "These are some of the drawings I did when I first discovered art and drawing." She said.
Jasmine admired the drawings with a certain awe. Ariel was as good as her mother and even better at capturing the emotions of people's faces. It was like seeing a glimpse into someone's soul. "These are amazing."
Ariel blushed. "Thank you. I had no idea that I could draw until I became human." She said. "So, what do you need help with?" She asked eager to start.
"Um, anything," she paused. "Everything." she laughed. Jasmine was hopelesswith art unless it involved art of words or maybe singing.
Ariel thought for a minute. "Maybe we should start with something simple. How's your drawing?" She asked flipping to a blank page and handing her the pencil.
"I can do hearts, most of the time." Jasmine thought. "Once I drew a face but... well it was supposed to be a guy but it turned into a woman along the way." She grimaced.
Ariel laughed softly. "Can you show me your best work?" She asked. She needed to know where Jasmine was at skill wise before she could help her.
"Yep." Jasmine grabbed the pad and pencil. She drew a large heart and inside wrote. 'My very best' in caligraphy style. She handed it back with a grin.
Ariel smiled shaking her head. "Okay I get it. What was your project on?" She asked. Se wanted to help but had never taught anyone before.
"To start we were simply supposed to sketch something that inspired us." Jasmine grimaced. "I turned in a blank page and said my inspiration was open for interpretation." She waited for Ariel to laugh or something.
"That's actually pretty brilliant." She said. "And your teacher didn't like it?" She asked confused. There were many ways to interpret inspiration and she shouldn't have got graded down for a blank paper.
Jasmine loved Ariel for being so supportive and kind about the whole thing. "He's not really a modern art sort of guy." Jasmine explained. "I'm better with words though, not pictures."
Ariel nodded. "I get that. Maybe I can help you draw a picture and you can resubmit your project. We can incorporate words too."
"That's positively genius!" Jasmine exclaimed. A sudden thought came to her. "Could we try to draw the view from my old bedroom window? I have a photo with me." Jasmine reached for her bag and the photo inside it.
Ariel smiled and nodded. "Sure!" She said reaching for the photo. She was excited to have something to take her mind off of Eric.
Jasmine handed the photo over. Ariel was the only person she had let touch or see the photo other than herself. It was a view of her window splattered with raindrops, you could see the open field behing her house and the forest behind that all wet and covered by a stormy sky. It was her favorite photo. This was her favorite sort of day.
Ariel trailed a finger across the picture carefully. "It's beautiful." She said. She flipped to another page in her book. "I can draw the outline but you have to do the rest. I will help you though."
"Yeah, it is." Jasmine whispered, her eyes were a bit blurry. She missed home so badly. She wiped her eyes quickly. "yeah that sounds good and you can help me to get like the right textures and balance of colors along the way."
Ariel nodded. She began to draw the outline of the photo and then handed it over to Jasmine. "Just start sharing in the dark spaces that match the photo."
Jasmine did as she was told. She lightly shaded in portions of the trees and darker the spaces between them. She looked to Ariel to see if it was still alright.
Ariel nodded encouragingly. "You're doing perfect. Did you want to ad color too?" She asked standing to get the rest of her pencils.
"I'd love it!" She exclaimed. This was so much fun because she wasn't doing it alone anymore. With Ariel and her easy laugh and soft demeanor Jasmine felt comfortable even with a pencil in her hand.
Ariel gathered her pencils and brought them over to the bed. She studied the picture again deciding what colors would look best. "I think that you should only add splashes of color and not do it on the whole thing. Only use color on the important parts of the picture and it will pull the eye to that spot." She said.
"yeah, great. We can add color to the grass of the field and a bit where you can see the window frame." Jasmine agreed reaching for a few shades of green.
Ariel handed her some greens and yellows. "Make sure you blend them together and not just make it green. You want it to look real."
"Okay." Jasmine shaded in some of the grass in a light green, dark green and even a bit of black. she wan't sure if that was right but it didn't look too bad. It looked a lot like home.
