Wilhelmina Jenkins | 2049 comments The Whiting Writers’ Awards, given annually to 10 writers who have “exceptional talent and promise in early career,” were announced on Monday. At least one award was given to an author of color - Clifford Thompson, author of the novel Signifying Nothing, as well as a book of essays, Love for Sale and Other Essays. Has anyone here read his work? Are there any other authors of color on the list?

There's one recipient, Hanna Dela Cruz Abrams from Guam - Mariana Islands. I don't know cultural anthropologists out there (or group that researches this), would she be considered a person of color? If looks are an indicator then she is. Also, Rowan Ricardo Phillips is African American. Not sure about the others. Congratulations!

Mina, here's a group photo with information about the authors. Actually there are quite a few authors of color. What of you know!

Wilhelmina Jenkins | 2049 comments Great, Columbus! I remember Stephanie Powell Watts now, although I haven't read her book yet. Congratulations to the winners!

I read Signifying Nothing a couple of years ago. Part of the draw for me is the setting of Washington DC in the late 1970s.

Wilhelmina Jenkins | 2049 comments Would you recommend it, Beverly? I also love books set in DC, my hometown.
