John Cornelius After finishing this book, Ed, the narrator, mentions that Drew was the best of the four men. I honestly don't know why? Was it because he never killed the two mountain men? That he wasn't sodomized? that he wanted to tell the truth about what happened? Or that he died and the others lived?

What do you all think?

Licha You bring up a very good point. I don't believe any one of the men was better than another. They all went through a harrowing experience. I do think you bring up a good point in regards to the sodomy. There was a certain subtle ostracism towards the Ned Beatty character (sorry, I can't remember his name in the book) after he was raped. I'm sure that had a lot to do with this charcter being thought of as weak.

John Cornelius In the book, Bobby was the only one that was raped. Lewis killed one of them with the bow and arrow, Drew was the guitar player. Ed was with Bobby as the sodomy occurred and came close to being a victim of such himself. I haven't seen the movie for some time, but I think the movie stayed pretty close with the book.
