Hello All,I learned ASL in college. I took six semesters of ASL, one semester of ASL linguistics, and one semester of Signed English as part of my interpreting major requirements. I've been signing now for about nine years, interpreting for four.
Hello, Everyone! No deaf folks in my family and I didn't have deaf friends growing up.
But, about 7 years ago, I did some volunteer work and was assigned to work with a deaf adult who had no language at all. Long story short: For two years, we learned ASL together. :) We each got a new life out of that arrangement!!
I've been a working terp for three years, and I love it. Beautiful language, great people, the best thing in the world!
Obviously, I have a LOT to learn (after only a few years), but I work on it all the time and I plan to continue improving and developing.
How about the other members of the Group? How did you get into signing and interpreting?
TAKE CARE! _\,,/

I learned sign in high school. I loved it. I am now* (sorry I can't believe the typo lol) taking sign in college. I am a Deaf Studies major and I hope *fingers crossed* to get into the interpreting program next year

I am learning sign language in college now, but we only have 4 semester of ASL and one semester of Manually Coded English and then that's it for our signing classes. I'm terrified I'm going to forget everything now that I've finished my ASL classes and still have two more years of school left. I feel sadly unprepared for the field.

I attended Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. They have a deaf education program, I majored in deaf ed. when I first started college, and then I switched to their intepreting program. The interpreting program is through the college of education and is a four-year program specific to educational interpreting. Kent State also offers a degree in ASL, through the school of modern and classical languages.

Deaf ed is what I'm majoring in now. There's an interpreting program at a nearby school, but they have just as many classes as I do. Although they take ASL linguistics instead of Manual English. It's a shame that more courses are not available in my state.
