I haven't ordered this for my library yet because I'm having a difficult time deciding whether or not children would enjoy it. I, however, absolutely loved it. There is a lot going on in this family, and most of it is pretty sad...some of it is very frightening. The fact that books and stories are so terribly crucial to the children, and to their father, really speaks to me (and probably many other adults). I'm not sure what children will make of it.
When I read this book I remember being on the edge of my seat! I loved the references to "Treasure Island". However, due to the fact that the father kidnaps his own children and keeps them hostage for awhile in the basement I would have a hard time recommending this book for elementary students. I thought it was a well written story about family, forgiveness and caring for aging grandparents. I agree with Lisa in that I really enjoyed this story but have hesitations about the audience for this book.
