The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is about two teenagers with cancer falling in love and dealing with their lives. In the beginning of the book, Hazel Lancaster (main character, story told from her perspective) is constantly in a MELANCHOLY attitude. She doesn’t want to leave home very much and her mother thinks she some type of home body but she gets her to go to a support group meeting. Hazel has thyroid cancer and because of the medicine she is taking for a study to help cure her type of cancer her lungs have become horrible and she cannot SUPPLANT them because her medication will only ATTRITION them again. Hazel hates the support group meetings but when she shows up for this one she meets Augustus waters. Augustus is this beautiful looking man that happens to just be staring at Hazel. Gus has osteosarcoma which caused him to have his right leg amputated. He doesn’t act like most cancer patients. He isn’t into the whole I have cancer feel bad for me thing just like Hazel. After the meeting Gus asks Hazel to go watch a movie at his house even though they have never met before they are practically strangers but she says yes. Hazel is obsessed with this book An Imperial Affliction. The book is about a cancer patient and ends with no conclusion but to what the reader thinks. Hazel had never shared her love for the book because it’s strange for a cancer patient to find so much love in such a sad book about cancer. Until she shares it with Augustus who agrees he will read the book in return she’ll read his favorite book about a spinoff of a video game. From the first date they begin to fall for each other. Hazel is against the idea of being together and having those feelings because she doesn’t want him to be sad if she dies but they always come together. The have begun to try to find answers to the book but they have not been successful. Gus and Hazel’s obsession with hearing the answers to the end of the book may become a reality when after emails with the author’s assistant; the author, Peter Van Houten, says he will met with them if they can get to Amsterdam. A couple days later, Gus takes Hazel out on a date that has all these metaphors to Swedish and Amsterdam. At the end of the date Gus tells Hazel they are going to Amsterdam using Gus’s Wish (a cancer perk). But then for about 3 weeks they don’t see each other at all. Hazel’s lungs started to fill up with water one night and she is “drowning” in her own body so she is rushed to the hospital. She doesn’t allow Gus to come see her because she looks horrible and vulnerable which she doesn’t want him to see even though they are completely inseparable. For a week after she was let out of the hospital she believes the trip is off but she then finds out the doctor cleared her. The trip the Amsterdam was not what was expect but turned out to be amazing. In the morning when they left on the plane everything thing seems as is; Hazel has Gus “friend-zoned” but not really “friend-zoned”. At night while they still are flying Augustus tells Hazel Grace that he loves her, and she didn’t know what to say because she was scared but he accepts her and just kisses her on the head. The next night when they got to Amsterdam, Van Houten has set up a dinner just for Hazel and Gus. The dinner is romantically beautiful. Gus and Hazel are completely comfortable with each and the night going amazingly. They are excited for the meeting with the author the next day so they go back to the hotel and fall asleep. The meeting goes horribly; Van Houten is drunk, doesn’t want to talk to them, and the answers he gives them are to only offend them. He rags on the fact that they are cancer patients and says that they are idiots. His assistant feels like the whole thing is her fault so she treat them with going to the Anne Frank house which becomes the place of Gus and Hazel’s first real kiss. Then they go back to the hotel which becomes their first sexual experience and Hazel finally admits that she loves Augustus waters. On the last day of their trip Augustus tells Hazel that his cancer has reappeared, he says that in his PET scan his body lit up like a Christmas tree. After the trip Augustus starts to get worse. The treatments aren’t working and he is starting to give up. He has his good days but most are bad but on his last good day he calls his best friend Isaac and Hazel to the support group meeting location. He has them write eulogy’s for him and has them read them as if it is a “pre-funeral”. Then 8 days later he passed away. Hazel becomes heartbroken and doesn’t want to deal with it or her life anymore. She is depressed and doesn’t know how to deal. Finally she finds comfort in her parents and when the funeral rolls around she is up for a surprise. Van Houten shows ups and tries to give her the answers she wants because Gus had emailed him asking him too but she gets him to write a second book which he really didn’t want to but realizes it is for the best. Isaac tells Hazel that Gus was writing her something a month before he died but she searched for it but couldn’t find anything until she realizes Gus sent it to Van Houten. Van Houten’s assistant was able to find the pages and sent them to her. They are Gus’s eulogy for Hazel. The pages bring peace and acceptation of what happened in Hazel’s life.
