Try:The Mentalist (Think FBI: House, done nice)
Lie to Me (Think House at his snarkiest)
Both have really good ensemble casts and good stories.
I don't watch TV (series) either. I am doing the same as you YZ. Getting them on DVD. Perhaps I will check out the posts as people make suggestions. I have gotten the same DVD's as you. Plus I watched ONE episode of House and now want the whole season(s). LOL. Yikes! My fave TV on DVD:
-Smallville
-Nip/Tuck
-Supernatural (yet to be watched, but when I watched TV I liked season 1)
Would like to get
Pretty much anything on CBS or FOX lol.
-House
-ER
-Some USA shows
For starters.
One show that I completely finished and thoroughly enjoyed is Roswell. It's a quirky teenage show about aliens in Roswell, New Mexico, but I thought it was a fun experience watching.
I loved Roswell when it was on! I was thrilled when they released the DVD sets because the last season was a nightmare for me. My local station stopped carrying the show, so I had to get my aunt to tape it for me!Have either of you seen Firefly? It was a Fox show on several years ago that was a great mix of space cowboy rebels. I loved that show, and Joss Whedon of Buffy fame created it.
Firefly was fantastic! I also highly recommend Battlestar Galactica, Arrested Development, and How I Met Your Mother. I would add Lost, because it's my Number One, but you're already watching it. Keep it up!!!

I love the mentalist!!!! Cupid is awesome too... I hope it comes back next season
I watched Firefly b/c I thought the Capt. was cute but then it was a good show after all. I bought Serenity on DVD. I haven't seen the other shows (on DVD, though I have watched an episode). I have only heard of The Mentalist and Lie to Me.
I collected all of Roswell on DVD b/c I wanted to finally watch the complete series. Took me ages but it was the best (I can say now) young adult paranormal romance TV series.
I've seen the movie, but I haven't watched the TV show. I just put Firefly the series on my Netflix queue. I also saved first seasons of The Mentalist and Lie to Me, too.Yes, Roswell was a great show. I definitely agree on your assessment, Kenjii.
Yz, I loved Roswell when it was on TV. It was one of my favorite shows. Now you're bringing back memories. I think I might have to get it on DVD to reminisce.:-) Did you know that it was based on the Roswell High book series? I haven't read any of them so I don't know how the two compare.I'll second...third? Firefly too. That show was awesome and far too short-lived.
Right now my hubby's and my favorite show is Chuck. He is such an adorable quirky geek, and the show is a great mix of sci-fi, spy action, some of the best humor ever (IMHO - it has made me laugh until I cried), and even a little romance. Couldn't ask for much more than that.:-)
My hubby has gotten me hooked on Futurama (Shhhhh! don't tell him I said that;-)). I resisted watching for a long time thinking that it was going to be cheesy, but it's turned out to be quite good.
I'm also a pretty big fan of The Pretender. It's a little dated (from the '90s), but a really good show about a guy who is a genius. He learns and adapts so quickly he can literally "pretend" to be anyone he wants to be......doctor one day, cop the next, etc, etc. As a child he was taken from his family and exploited for evil purposes by a covert agency. He escaped and is trying to make up for the bad things he unwittingly did for them by helping people in unique and creative ways while trying to find his family and elude re-capture by the bad guys. It was a really cool show.
I'll fourth Firefly (or pretty much anything by Joss Whedon) and suggest maybe checking out Alias, which is also by J J Abrams (the man behind Lost) - lots of spy fun with romance, cliffhanger endings, an excellent soundtrack and of course great dress-ups and wigs :)Also, maybe, Tru Calling, a supernatural series about a woman who gets the chance to rewind time and save someone from dying each episode. It didn't last long, but one of my favourite House writers wrote some of the episodes and I thought it got stronger as season 1 went on and the plot thickened!
Oh, plus, how about Dead Like Me, about a girl who becomes a grim reaper? It's funnier and more heartwarming than it sounds, but also snarky and full of dark comedy.
I didn't know one of the House writers did some Tru. I loved Tru Calling, and I was upset it never got to end like it should've. They just up and cancelled when things were getting interesting.Still worth checking out, though, so I second Tru.
Ooh, I forgot to recommend Castle, too. I love anything Nathan Fillion (hence the Firefly recommend), but he's super funny and cute in this show.
Yup, Doris Egan, also appears as Jane Emerson. She has some cool posts on her blog that detail what might have happened on Tru if it had continued, and she also has plenty of behind-the-scenes talk about House (particularly the scripting process):http://tightropegirl.livejournal.com/
Plus, she's written some great sci fi novels, as Doris Egan, and if you enjoyed Dark Angel, she also wrote for that and Smallville.
Oh, you gals are really bringing back the memories. I loved Tru Calling and Dark Angel too Danielle. Again, favs when they were on and too short-lived. I was upset about the way Tru Calling ended too Sarah. I'll have to check out Castle. I haven't heard of it, but I love Nathan Fillion too. Have you seen the movie Waitress? He was great in that.:-)
Oh! One more then I'll give it a rest. For the ultimate in screwed-up bad boy romance, try Season 1 of Veronica Mars. Great, slow-burning romance and great snappy dialogue. That's all from me!
I get too impatient to watch shows on tv - that once a week thing doesn't do it for me. I want my fix in big doses so usually end up buying a season or two on dvd here and there and then overdosing in one weekend:Due South - 80s series with the Mountie *sigh* I had such a crush on Constable Benton Frasier LOL
NCIS - with Mark Harmon et al
The Dresden Files - loved the books and thought the tv series was hilarious
Bones - prob just for Boreanaz but I like the dynamics between the characters and the constant 'will they, won't they' between Booth and Bones keeps me hooked (even though I hope they never do)
Numb3rs - the geek is sexy (smart always does it for me)
Monk - the defective detective
CSI Miami - simply for Horatio *sigh* he's a god in my eyes
True Blood - watched the whole series in one weekend, can't help but compare to the books LOL
Outrageous Fortune - very funny, balls to the wall NZ series
Veronica Mars
Flight of the Conchords - hilarious

I own this series and rewatch it regularly! LOVE the dialogue and the cases Veronica is so smart to solve. Why oh why did this only get 3 seasons!?!
1. Psych - I love Shawn and Gus. They are too funny2. CSI Miami - I like the older episodes with Speed. I love Speed. I watch post Speed episodes.
3. Saving Grace - I only watch for Butch
4. Lincoln Heights
5. Primeval - I just started watching this show last year
YoudontGnomie wrote: "I love the mentalist!!!! Cupid is awesome too... I hope it comes back next season"The Mentalist is coming back, but Cupid's got already cancelled. Sorry.
Melissa wrote: "Oh! Definitely Psych! And Burn Notice. Love that Michael Weston!"Uhhh I adore Michael Weston, but I cannot stand Fiona in Burn Notice, donno why... so I've stopped watching :/
I can see why Fiona is a put off, but it's gotten really good. The last few episodes of the last season were just so great. Lots of intrigue and kept me guessing and lots of Michael kicking ass. The new season just started last Thursday.Anyone know when Psych is back? They keep saying "soon" and "this summer" but I don't know what that means!!!
Kasia, you can send me a private note. I don't really watch True Blood, I have seen the episodes last year, only because I found out that there was an interracial pairing on the show. Sam and Tara. I might be saying her name wrong. I know that she likes Sookie's brother. He's cute, but he likes to say nake alot. I want to know if Lafayette is back and is he a vampire? I'm not into Lafayette, I was just wondering what happen to him, because he went missing.
I've started watching the first season of True Blood on DVD and I've seen only 4 episodes so far... My, this show, is pretty racy..LOL.And yes, I'm going to break down on my no TV rule, and will watch the 2nd season on HBO.
Also, even though I've read up to Book 4 of the Sookie Stackhouse series...I'm trying not to compare the show too much with the books...Just trying to enjoy it based on its own merits..LOL
Yep...I was warned by other people, but I was still caught off guard. Was watching it with hubby, and he was like..wow..is this why you want to watch this show? Lots of nakedbodies..LOL..I just sort of wince and muttered something like...just keep watching or go away...LOL
LOL I like it, nudity doesn't faze me. As long as there's no gore - I'm good. I just can't stand gore and that kind of violence. But I agree, True Blood's not for everybody. And don't worry Arch, I don't pester people with PMs, we all are entitled to our own opinions.
Kasia,I have asked you to send me a private message, because I wanted to find out about Lafayette and I didn't want to spoil anything for anyone else.
I know that some people don't like spoilers.
Oh, but I do not know what happens to Lafayette yet, I know what happends to him in books, but TV hasn't got there yet. I'll send you a PM as soon as series would get moving on that front, how about that?
I only saw True Blood through a co-worker who taped the programs, but I liked it ok. I still think the books were better. As for gore, can I just say: worst intro credits ever. Gross roadkill. Shiver.
OK Someone needs to start a thread with all the shows and put the info such as -main actor
-# of seasons
-a bit of what its about
-if its been canceled, so we are prepared for the abrupt ending, lol.
I mean I won't mind buying/renting these shows but I can't keep up with all the posts. You guys are great at adding your two cents though. I love being able to know this writer did this and this show. Or so and so produced this and that. Thanks! Please do the show listing thread.

Kenjii - I always check out shows on imdb - it's the easies way to know how many seasons there are, who stars in it etc. But we could have a separate thread for different show here - sure.
Now I'm trying to think of shows that do not air anymore but that I've enjoyed a lot....Bodies - UK medical drama - very intense (2 short seasons)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398427/
Freaks and Geeks - set in 80s with James Franco - yum!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0193676/ (one season only boo)
Swingtown - welcome to the 70s (one season only boo) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0928173/
This Life - cult UK TV show from the 90s (2 short seasons)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115390/
that's what I can think of right now...

So I've decided, why not ask my GR friends what TV shows they like and maybe get some more ideas.
Just to share what I enjoy, I'm currently watching the following shows on DVDs:
House M.D.
(I love Gregory House..enough said)
Smallville
(Okay a hunky superman without the costume..of course I have to see it)
Bones
(Love the dynamics between Bones and Booth, reminds me of Mulder and Scully)
Lost
(I can't remember who recommended this show but I guess I just have to keep watching to see what happens next)
True Blood
(Just started first season; Have to see what the big fuss is all about; trying hard not to compare to the book)
In my queue:
1. Dresden Files - (After reading the first Harry Dresden files, I know I have to check the TV show)
2. Supernatural - (Heard about it from some PNR group)
3. Moonlight - (Another TV vamp show)
Based on my selections, what other TV shows do you think I should add to my list?
