Shirley | 4177 comments Hi everyone :-)

It's that time again - Fiction Read Nominations for December 2013.

The 'rules' are:

- One nomination per person
- First six 'seconded' nominations will be put in a poll where members can vote on their choice.
- The book should be fiction but should not be a 'classic' novel, as we have a separate bi-monthly classics read.
- The book nominated should be available in paperback form.

This thread will remain open until 6th November or until six seconded nominations are made. The poll will be open from 7th November until 13th November and the winner will be announced on the 14th November.

The Fiction read does not have to tie in to the bi-monthly theme challenge.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on this thread :-)

Valetta | 33 comments I'd like to nominate The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I don't know if you have already read it in the past, I didn't see it in past discussions, if so I apologize and I will provide a new nomination :)

We haven't read that as a group, so your nomination is fine.

message 4: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) I'd like to nominate Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. Even though The Fault in Our Stars will probably win, I've read it already and I know Alias Grace is one of the lesser known works of Margaret Atwood.

I'll second Alias Grace! Sorry can't link as on phone ap but can come back and link if you need me to

message 7: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Has any of you guys read The Child Thiefby Brom? I placed that one on hold at my library and would love to give it a read. I'd like to nominate this one. It looks to be a pretty good read and it's a modern take on Peter Pan.

I've not read it Amber, do you want to nominate it?

message 9: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Yes I do, Shirley. ^_^

message 10: by Julia (last edited Oct 29, 2013 12:32PM) (new)

Julia (juliastrimer) I notice that The Shadow of the Wind was tied for second place in the last poll; may I nominate it again? Thanks.

message 11: by Pink (new)

Pink I'd like to nominate Born Weird which is Andrew Kaufman's most recent book and recently available in paperback. I've read a couple of his other books and quite enjoyed them, especially, All my Friends are Superheroes, so thought I'd give this one a shot. I have the hardest time thinking or newer fiction books to nominate as most of my choices fall into classics or non-fiction. Looking forward to seeing what else gets nominated for December, as I need more ideas!

Denise (drbetteridge) I'd like to nominate The Stockholm Octavo. It's supposed to be historical fiction, mystery, fantasy. Set in late 18th century Sweden.

message 16: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 206 comments Hi everyone! For december I would like to nominate The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, because how can I not with such a title?! Also, it has very good reviews, it's about a group of literature lovers and somehow the cover fits with my idea of december-ish book

Oh, I will second this as it has been sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get it!

message 18: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I surprised myself by really enjoying this book, so I'm pleased someone has seconded it!! Seemed a bit weird for me to second a book I'd already read.

message 19: by Portia (new)

Portia I third. I read this book about two years ago and also liked it. The things I have yet to learn about WWII boggle my mind. I only recently found out that the Germans had submarines off the coast of New England. Yikes!

And speaking of WWII and before, has everyone read Life After Life? Many stars.

Portia, I haven't yet, but it's high up on my list

I would like to nominate The Husband's Secret :) It looks rather intriguing.

I love the title! But since it has already been seconded, I'll see if there's something else

message 23: by Briana (new)

Briana Galbraith (bgalbraith) I'd like to nominate Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close if it hasn't been read yet.

message 24: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Being a December read (Christmas season) I will like to nominate The Neverending Story.

message 25: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 14412 comments Mod
We're a pretty "joung" group Briana: we've read just two books for fiction so far: The Light Between Oceans and The House on the Strand. For november we are starting The Thirteenth Tale.
So plenty of space for new and "old" titles!!!

message 26: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 206 comments Nice to hear some good feedback on the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society! Now I really hope that it will have a chance in the poll!

We are two then!

message 28: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Here's a link to my review of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in case it helps you decide. I think the book's well worth a read. (My review doesn't have any spoilers.)

message 30: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 283 comments I'm going to second Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close then - brilliant book.

Today is Election Day for some states today so I'll pass on a joke we all say over here on the day:

Vote early and vote often!

I will second it if you nominate it Gemma, heard good things about it.

message 38: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Even though I nominated The Child Thiefby Brom, I'll be getting that book to read next so will happily do it as a readalong for anyone that wants to read it with me. I'll prob be getting it this month when I get the email from the overdrive ebooks library to pick it up. I'm user 1 of 1 on the holds list for it. It looks to be a pretty good read. I'll only have it for two weeks though.
