Nathan (mtnathan) | 1 comments I'm wondering what a few good short books are for reading aloud to a boy in Grade 2 (about 6-7 years old I believe). I'm going to be tutoring him in reading and at the first meeting I am supposed to read him a picture book. Since I haven't met him yet I don't know what he likes. Do any of you have suggestions for that age group?

Jenny | 16 comments Big Mean Mikeis one my 7 year old liked. It has an AR level 3.0, so if he is in need of tutoring, it might be just above his level.
Clark the Sharkis a cute one too. It has an AR level of 2.7.
One Cool Friendis a funny book about a kid bringing a penguin home from the zoo. It has an AR level of 3.1.
Another Brotheris a fun book with simple but fun illustrations. It has an AR level of 2.1.
Do Not Open This Bookis another book my son liked. (AR 2.6) He thought it was funny that the "narrator" keeps telling the reader to stop reading because he hasn't had a chance to write the book yet. It might get a chuckle. With my kids a way to almost always get them to do things is with humor, so I'll tell them not to smile, etc. when that is what I want. (I use it sparingly as I don't want to train them to disobey!)But, this just might be the right motivation for a kid who is reluctant to read.
Creepy Carrots!is a book with a fun twist. My kids thought the outcome was hilarious. (AR 2.3)
Iggy Peck, Architect (AR 4.1) is obviously a higher level, but it is about a boy in 2nd grade who likes to build things. When he is told to stop building and just sit still in class he dislikes school a lot. His class goes on a field trip and Iggy's love of building saves the day. His teacher realizes he has a gift and lets him go back to building.
He Came with the Couch (AR 1.5) Is a cute little story and an easier read.
Space Caseand Merry Christmas, Space Case (Both AR 2.8) are favorites in our house and the first is seasonally appropriate.
Some Dogs Do is another book my son liked, though it may be too babyish if he is a tough kid.
The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Washand others in the series are all in the AR 2.2-2,8 range. They are a little more rough and tumble with kid shenanigans, so they are a fun read.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program lots of schools use to steer their students towards appropriate reading levels. It has a free website on which you can look up books. Just type AR Bookfinder into a search engine and follow the prompts. http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx

Jenny had a lot of good suggestions. A couple of more suggestions that tickle the funny bones of early elementary students:
Sue Denim (pseudonym of Dav Pilkey) wrote several Dumb Bunny books which are quite funny, such as The Dumb Bunnies. Also, his Kat Kong and Dogzilla are very funny.
