Sorry to say but the first section of questions won't be posted until late on the 12th.
Happy reading!

1) What were your thoughts on the chase scene in the prologue? Did you expect Tolman to kill himself? Do you think we'll see more of Vasco and Dolly to come?
2) What did you think about the court case, Burnet vs UCLA? What would you do if you were in Burnet's place? Would you have sued?
3) Gene testing in a custody case? Do you think the arguments will work? And what's this with Diehl being willing to fake his own results? Makes me wonder what he's hiding.
4) Talking apes! And a "master" gene? It's interesting to think what our genes could actually be controlling in us.
5) What are your first impressions of the book? Loving it? Hating it? Do you like all the science jargon?
6) Any predictions for the rest of the book?

1) What were your thoughts on the chase scene in the prologue? Did you expect Tolman to kill himself? Do you think we'll see more of Vasco and Dolly to come?
It reminded me of Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park with the embryos in the canister. I'm curious who has the embryos and why Tolman felt he had to die. It makes me think this whole enterprise is dangerous business. I hope we see Vasco and Dolly again! They are a fun team.
2) What did you think about the court case, Burnet vs UCLA? What would you do if you were in Burnet's place? Would you have sued?
I'd have been pissed if I was Burnet! Though I probably would have read the releases a bit more carefully. :)
3) Gene testing in a custody case? Do you think the arguments will work? And what's this with Diehl being willing to fake his own results? Makes me wonder what he's hiding.
I was ready to write off Diehl as a pushover type but he seemed pretty confident (and shady) in that scene! So strange. I don't get the point of the testing.
4) Talking apes! And a "master" gene? It's interesting to think what our genes could actually be controlling in us.
It's all pretty fascinating. The talking ape thing would completely freak me out. I think primates are creepy.
5) What are your first impressions of the book? Loving it? Hating it? Do you like all the science jargon?
I really like it so far. I had to make myself put it down!
6) Any predictions for the rest of the book?
I'm just excited to see where it goes. He sure has a lot of balls in the air, and I can't wait to see how the puzzle comes together.

1. This definitely seems like one hell of a business. So much going on all over the place!
2. I just didn't understand why he didn't ask if he was sick or get more info along the way. 4 years before really questioning? c'mon.
5. I'm glad you're liking it so much!

1) What were your thoughts on the chase scene in the prologue? Did you expect Tolman to kill himself? Do you think we'll see more of Vasco and Dolly to come?
I did not expect him to kill himself! Maybe he figured he was going to be targeted by the people who hired him for messing up, a loose end to clean up. I think we will see more of Vasco & Dolly.
2) What did you think about the court case, Burnet vs UCLA? What would you do if you were in Burnet's place? Would you have sued?
My husband is a lawyer so I am way more unlikely to sue than the average person because I know how much lawsuits suck!!! But I think this is one of those cases I might do it. That doctor needs to be held accountable!
3) Gene testing in a custody case? Do you think the arguments will work? And what's this with Diehl being willing to fake his own results? Makes me wonder what he's hiding.
I think it's a little farfetched that a judge would agree to that degree of testing, but you never know with the legal profession.
4) Talking apes! And a "master" gene? It's interesting to think what our genes could actually be controlling in us.
It's definitely interesting to think about. It makes me wonder where science will be in 10, 20 years.
5) What are your first impressions of the book? Loving it? Hating it? Do you like all the science jargon?
I am liking the book, although I do admit some of the science stuff is probably going over my head. :)
6) Any predictions for the rest of the book?
I think the virus is going to do something to Adam.

1. A part of me wonders if the plan was for him to die all along or if he just messed up so bad he had no choice.
3. I didn't really think about a judge having to approve it. If nothing else it will definitely drag out the proceedings which the lawyer wanted to do.

@Kay - Good point about Adam. That virus is definitely going to get out!

7) A mystery man appears asking for Burnet's cells. Do you think he should take the offer? Or continue with the appeal?
8) The genetics industry sounds brutal. What'd you think of them just happening to "lose" Tom's dad's tissue in order to avoid litigation?
9) What'd you think of Robbin' Rob and him stealing the "novelty gene" grant idea?
10) Mrs. Diehl had quite the reaction to being asked for genetic testing. Do you think she went overboard? Or was her reaction justified?
11) Could you imagine randomly figuring out a drug could cure drug addiction like the story of Josh and Adam? If you were Josh would you go ahead testing the hypothesis or try to do it properly with grants and approvals?
12) Have you heard of chimerism before? How strange to think that one person could have two types of DNA!
13) What are they taking long bones from dead people for?!?

1) What were your thoughts on the chase scene in the prologue? Did you expect Tolman to kill himself? Do you think we'll see more of Vasco and Dolly to come?
Didn't expect him to kill himself. He'd only kill himself to prevent a worse fate. He must know something that he thinks someone would torture out of him, or be working for someone who would punish him if he failed.
2) What did you think about the court case, Burnet vs UCLA? What would you do if you were in Burnet's place? Would you have sued?
I would have asked more questions of my doctor from the beginning. I couldn't afford the lawyers to go up against such a big company, but I would at leat try for an out of court settlement.
3) Gene testing in a custody case? Do you think the arguments will work? And what's this with Diehl being willing to fake his own results? Makes me wonder what he's hiding.
Gene testing seems a bit over the top. Maybe Diehl has a positive genetic trait he has passed on to his kids and that's why he wants custody, so he can still access them for research.
4) Talking apes! And a "master" gene? It's interesting to think what our genes could actually be controlling in us.
Fascinating ideas.
5) What are your first impressions of the book? Loving it? Hating it? Do you like all the science jargon?
Enjoying it so far. Like to pretend I know what the science jargon means, makes me feel clever, but don't ask me to explain anything, all I really know is that bunch of letters and numbers is a chemical formula for stuff.
6) Any predictions for the rest of the book?
I think that when Josh gets back to the lab to administer the virus in the timeframe, the rats will already be mutated or dead, and by the time he gets back to his brother, Adam will be affected too.

2) good call with the out of court settlement. However, it doesn't sound to me like the company would ever settle for anything. They seem pretty confident in their ability to win.
3) Really interesting thought. I didn't really think about why he wanted the kids so bad. Especially if he's so busy with his work.
6) Another prediction for Adam. You gals are clever.

Would you all prefer a slower reading schedule since it's holiday time? Or is 50 pages a day ok?

7. They aren't offering him anything to settle out of court. If he continues with the appeal and then back to court out will cost him a lot and he probably won't win. He still owns his body, can he sell his cells to a competitor?
8. Coruption is everywhere. They are getting kickbacks I'm sure.
9. More corruption and back stabbing. He's not even trying to hide that he style the idea, he didn't change anything.
10. She was married to a man involved in genetics for a while and would most likely know why he wants to test her and understand the implications. She has something to hide.
11. Looks like Adam has matured a bit and is being more responsible. I wonder if this means he will also agree faster. He should do it properly with approval but that would take ages. It looks like he's about to go and test it himself. Have a bad feeling about this. I think it will be to good to be true.
12. Had heard of mythological chimera but not genetic before.
13. Long bones are marrow bones and would be a good source of adult stem cells for the stem cell research. Hmm have I mentioned corruption. .. I wonder which of all the dodgy companies is behind this one.

Happy Reading!

7) Good question. He should be able to make a ton of money off his cells if he sells them around. I'm sure lots of places will want to research it.
13) That makes sense. I don't know much about medicine and such so didn't really think of the marrow.

I think he should continue with the appeal. What good is having lots of money if you possibly end up in jail? :)
8) The genetics industry sounds brutal. What'd you think of them just happening to "lose" Tom's dad's tissue in order to avoid litigation?
That made me mad they were trying to cover things up. I hope they get found out in the end.
9) What'd you think of Robbin' Rob and him stealing the "novelty gene" grant idea?
This one also made me mad.
10) Mrs. Diehl had quite the reaction to being asked for genetic testing. Do you think she went overboard? Or was her reaction justified?
She must be hiding something that her soon to be ex has an idea of or suspects.
11) Could you imagine randomly figuring out a drug could cure drug addiction like the story of Josh and Adam? If you were Josh would you go ahead testing the hypothesis or try to do it properly with grants and approvals?
No way. I am shocked he is going to do this! He could cause all kinds of problems.
12) Have you heard of chimerism before? How strange to think that one person could have two types of DNA!
I haven't heard of it before. But I am going to go google it tonight. :)
13) What are they taking long bones from dead people for?!?
I don't know, but that's just creepy.

7) A mystery man appears asking for Burnet's cells. Do you think he should take the offer? Or continue with the appeal?
For 100 million I'd probably take the deal. Why not get some profit from your own cells?
8) The genetics industry sounds brutal. What'd you think of them just happening to "lose" Tom's dad's tissue in order to avoid litigation?
So sketchy! But I have no doubt things like this happen all the time. Whenever lots of money stands to be lost, people lose their minds.
9) What'd you think of Robbin' Rob and him stealing the "novelty gene" grant idea?
Everyone in this book is so shady! lol. It's the seemingly unimpeachable that have the connections and resources to get away with murder, or in this case steal ideas with no repercussions.
10) Mrs. Diehl had quite the reaction to being asked for genetic testing. Do you think she went overboard? Or was her reaction justified?
I felt like she must know what it will be used for. Is she hiding genetic secrets? There's something she wants to hide, I think.
11) Could you imagine randomly figuring out a drug could cure drug addiction like the story of Josh and Adam? If you were Josh would you go ahead testing the hypothesis or try to do it properly with grants and approvals?
I would. He'd have to jump through the hoops to get it approved for mass use anyway, and doing it this way just sets him up to be disgraced and lose ownership of the discovery. Dumb, dumb.
12) Have you heard of chimerism before? How strange to think that one person could have two types of DNA!
I had heard of it, but so long ago I had forgotten it again. Pretty interesting, and makes me wonder how common it is and what that means for reliability of DNA evidence in crimes.
13) What are they taking long bones from dead people for?!?
That had me stumped too. Ew!!!

14) This lab seems to have all sorts of problems! Stealing bones, faking blood tests, warning wives who possibly poisoned their husband...what will they do next?
15) After hearing from Robbin' Rob, what's your first impression? What do you think of his religious argument? How about the patenting of human genes?
16) Looks like someone isn't paying much attention with this guy's body. Lead where the bones should be? And how many people are really involved in this whole bone stealing thing?
17) Seems like Brad is in quite a mess. Of course there's more to it, always someone plotting some big dramatic plan. Were you surprised to hear the girl had made everything up or that this was a revenge plan?
18) Did you expect Rick's wife to flee after being asked for testing? What do you think she's hiding?
19) Rick found out about Josh's endeavors with the maturity drug. Did you expect the positive reaction?

Sounds like you're pretty angry reading this book :-P
12) Let us know what you find. This book makes me want to get my genes tested for all this weird stuff :-P
@Logan
9) I know right? I'm shocked that no one can do anything about Rob stealing stuff. Is he super powerful or something?
11) I expected Josh to get fired or something for using the drugs inappropriately. I mean, someone would most definitely find out he was checking out too many samples that weren't being used on rats.

14) This lab seems to have all sorts of problems! Stealing bones, faking blood tests, warning wives who possibly poisoned their husband...what will they do next?
I know! Is the lab or Marty behind the setup in the prologue? Who are they selling bones to? I'm not sure where this is all headed.
15) After hearing from Robbin' Rob, what's your first impression? What do you think of his religious argument? How about the patenting of human genes?
Since this book was written the Supreme Court has banned patents on DNA, which I think will help prevent monopolies on genetic testing. I take issue with any attempt to confine medical benefits to privileged populations that can afford to access it.
I did kind of like his religious angle. I think God and science do not have to be mutually exclusive.
16) Looks like someone isn't paying much attention with this guy's body. Lead where the bones should be? And how many people are really involved in this whole bone stealing thing?
It must be a pretty big network. Marty keeps digging a bigger and bigger hole with this guy. They really messed with the wrong body. I want to know why his wife killed him!
17) Seems like Brad is in quite a mess. Of course there's more to it, always someone plotting some big dramatic plan. Were you surprised to hear the girl had made everything up or that this was a revenge plan?
It made sense in hindsight. The whole encounter was too easy, and the security lady said they'd handle it, but I still was shocked at the extent of the framing! I didn't realize at first (at the soccer game) that Brad was the same as the security chief. There are so many characters I'm not sure I'm keeping them all straight.
18) Did you expect Rick's wife to flee after being asked for testing? What do you think she's hiding?
I don't have a clue but I'm very excited to find out.
19) Rick found out about Josh's endeavors with the maturity drug. Did you expect the positive reaction?
I thought he'd be fired! What an interesting turn of events.

15) Oh that's great to know. I complete agree on the monopolies thing. It just hinders progress.
17) There are definitely too many characters to keep track of! Half the time I'm afraid I'll put the wrong name in a question. I actually hadn't realized he was the security guy, but that's good to know.

Look up Lydia Fairchild, similar case to the one in this book.

20) It's interesting to think of the changes you can do by messing with genes before birth. What'd you think of the "wet art" display article and all the pet changes? What would you do to your pet to make it more awesome?
21) I wish I had a parrot that helped with my homework growing up! Who knew parrots could be so smart?
22) Looks like things are starting to come together and BioGen is the center of it all. What do you think of the plan to ruin the Burnett cells? I wonder if the woman is the same one from the prologue?
23) Do you think Henry did the right thing taking Dave? Would you have done the same?
24) What do you think of the disease they invited in order to keep Dave safe? Were you surprised his wife went along and did all the leg work for it? Makes ya really think about what you read on the internet ☺.
25) Looks like Raza turned on his boss. Surprised?
26)Uh-Oh, bad news in the maturity gene realm. Do you think the spray will affect humans the same?

14) This lab seems to have all sorts of problems! Stealing bones, faking blood tests, warning wives who possibly poisoned their husband...what will they do next?
Coruption....Next...Retire rich or get busted
Seems like they aren't the only ones selling bones though. Warning the wife may not have worked in their favour as it just drew attention to the stolen bones.
15) After hearing from Robbin' Rob, what's your first impression? What do you think of his religious argument? How about the patenting of human genes?
Manipulative. Interesting way to blend god and science.
16) Looks like someone isn't paying much attention with this guy's body. Lead where the bones should be? And how many people are really involved in this whole bone stealing thing?
Some medical research company would be buying the bones and I think they would have a few suppliers as well as this lab.
17) Seems like Brad is in quite a mess. Of course there's more to it, always someone plotting some big dramatic plan. Were you surprised to hear the girl had made everything up or that this was a revenge plan?
No, she lied about her age from the beginning and came on really stong, like she was hunting him, so i'm not surprised she lied about the rape.
18) Did you expect Rick's wife to flee after being asked for testing? What do you think she's hiding?
I didn't think she would run. She left her kids, so she probably isn't hiding something that would prevent her getting custody as she just blew that one.
19) Rick found out about Josh's endeavors with the maturity drug. Did you expect the positive reaction?
Everyone is a bit corrupt in this book. He's happy because there are positive results so he feels confident to release news. I think it will all blow up and they will get caught.

20) It's interesting to think of the changes you can do by messing with genes before birth. What'd you think of the "wet art" display article and all the pet changes? What would you do to your pet to make it more awesome?
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. On the one hand, messing with genes for cosmetic purposes or for any benefit other than to the organism's health feels a bit icky to me. On the other hand, nothing appears to be being harmed here. I think having untrained artists messing around with gene therapy is a bit scary!
21) I wish I had a parrot that helped with my homework growing up! Who knew parrots could be so smart?
What I find so fascinating about parrots is their mimicry. Seriously, how do they copy voices without a voice box?! It blows my mind. The idea that people keep them as pets without enough stimulation made me really sad, though.
22) Looks like things are starting to come together and BioGen is the center of it all. What do you think of the plan to ruin the Burnett cells? I wonder if the woman is the same one from the prologue?
It seems strange that the primary investor would want to destroy a cell line that is making them so much money. I wonder if there's more to it than that. And that's an interesting thought about the woman. Maybe she is! I want to go back and re-read the prologue now.
23) Do you think Henry did the right thing taking Dave? Would you have done the same?
I keep thinking there's no way they're going to be able to keep that secret. What if he gets sick? Doctors are not going to be fooled into thinking he's human. And I'm worried he's going to freak out and hurt someone. At the same time, I don't think he should just be destroyed. What I like about this book is how well it illustrates that there are no easy answers.
24) What do you think of the disease they invited in order to keep Dave safe? Were you surprised his wife went along and did all the leg work for it? Makes ya really think about what you read on the internet ☺.
There's a strange affection growing between his wife and Dave. I'm so anxious to see what happens with that story line now. She seemed to take to the idea pretty quickly given how appalled she was at first, but maybe it's just her maternal instinct kicking in.
25) Looks like Raza turned on his boss. Surprised?
Not really. If anything, I feel like Marty should have seen that coming. No one will ever believe Raza was the one responsible since Marty has superiority.
26)Uh-oh, bad news in the maturity gene realm. Do you think the spray will affect humans the same?
It was too good to be true! How many people have been infected, I wonder? Rapid aging is not going to help them make millions, even if it does cure addiction.

20) It's interesting to think of the changes you can do by messing with genes before birth. What'd you think of the "wet art" display article and all the pet changes? What would you do to your pet to make it more awesome?
It's amazing what can be done with genetic modification but a greay area when it comes to ethics.
I used to love catdog...
Glow in the dark fish would make a cool night light.
21) I wish I had a parrot that helped with my homework growing up! Who knew parrots could be so smart?
I had heard that they were particularly intellegent. I have also heard that rats can be trained like dogs. I think most animals are more intelligent than we give them credit for.
22) Looks like things are starting to come together and BioGen is the center of it all. What do you think of the plan to ruin the Burnett cells? I wonder if the woman is the same one from the prologue?
The Burnett cells are the ones they had a court case about. Ruining them seems like a waste. Looks like this will backfire too, because the maturation gene looks like it wont make any money.
23) Do you think Henry did the right thing taking Dave? Would you have done the same?
I was so glad he saved Dave but had no idea how he was going to pull it off.
24) What do you think of the disease they invited in order to keep Dave safe? Were you surprised his wife went along and did all the leg work for it? Makes ya really think about what you read on the internet ☺.
That was quick thinking. They might actually be able to pull this off. There are lots of obscure genetic diseases out there. Now they need to explaine where he came from - birth certificate, adoption certificate etc
25) Looks like Raza turned on his boss. Surprised?
He cut and ran pretty quick, not surprised. He probably cut a deal to protect himself.
26)Uh-Oh, bad news in the maturity gene realm. Do you think the spray will affect humans the same?
Yep. I linked maturity with ageing when Adam first took the spray.

@Renee
17) I agree completely. I was just surprised at the big story behind the scheme.
18) Good point about leaving her kids. Now I really want to know what she's hiding. I guess it could be that the Huntington's test really scares her that much. But why run? Why not just give up custody?
20) The glow in the dark fish makes me think of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
25) I wonder if Raza managed to profit off the whole thing.
Logan:
23) True. Although maybe he'll know enough medicine to fix him? I don't know.
26) Quality of life over quantity? :-P

27) In the presentation to the aides, Garfield says scientists can't agree on what is a gene or how they work. Does this affect your opinion on whether they should continue genetic experiments?
28) What do you make of Lynn's behavior becoming more ape-like?
29) Ellis got very physical trying to administer the spray on his mother. Would you force a treatment on a family member if you thought it could help or even save them?
30) Advertising by modifying entire species?! Is nothing sacred? What do you think of that sea turtle? Are they protecting them or ruining them?
31) I can't believe Richard was petty enough to sell the parrot. What do you think will happen?
32) Does the genetic defense work for you? Should we be able to argue our genes are to blame for crime?

1) What were your thoughts on the chase scene in the prologue? Did you expect Tolman to kill himself? Do you think we'll see more of Vasco and Dolly to come?
I wonder if he killed himself because he didn't have the samples. Maybe he was threatened into doing it. I assume we'll see more of them, they were reasonably developed to just drop off the story.
2) What did you think about the court case, Burnet vs UCLA? What would you do if you were in Burnet's place? Would you have sued?
I probably would have. In those types of cases I feel like it's not really the person sueing who should get the money but more of a deterrent towards others doing the same thing. It would have been nice if he had said he'd donate anything he got out of it (after fees of course) to a leukemia fund or something. That would have helped his reputation a lot. The daughter seems like she's going to be a big player in the book.
3) Gene testing in a custody case? Do you think the arguments will work? And what's this with Diehl being willing to fake his own results? Makes me wonder what he's hiding.
Hrm... I don't think it would matter if it was something that wouldn't develop for 20+ years. If it's something you're suffering from right now I suppose it could. I'm not sure if the gene non discrimination laws cover legal issues and not just life insurance/healthcare ones. I certainly don't think someone has the right to force someone to get testing they don't want to.
4) Talking apes! And a "master" gene? It's interesting to think what our genes could actually be controlling in us.
I feel like this is a ploy on the sociopath gene that was announced awhile back. It's a big case of nature vs. nurture in how we end up. I'm not sure I agree that there's one gene that determines all this. I remember seeing that introverts are people who are extra sensitive to stimuli so they get more input from things than extroverts which is why they tire out while extroverts need more input. I'm guessing it's something like that that is maybe a combination of extrovert and some other property.
5) What are your first impressions of the book? Loving it? Hating it? Do you like all the science jargon?
I like it so far but there's a ton of different plots going on. I hope some of them combine soon. I don't mine the science jargon, I follow it fine.
6) Any predictions for the rest of the book?
I'm betting the mature gene virus works and turns the kid mature but maybe causes some other effect. That seems to be the way genetic type books work. Or the monkeys will take over the world :)

7) A mystery man appears asking for Burnet's cells. Do you think he should take the offer? Or continue with the appeal?
I can't imagine that they'd be able to prevent him from selling/giving away his blood to someone else. It's one thing to force him to do it to one company but to take away his right to do it himself seems way wrong since they were using the medical waste argument. Someone's getting a bribe imo. If I was him I'd just give away my blood to any company/research facility that wants it to spite the people who bought it.
8) The genetics industry sounds brutal. What'd you think of them just happening to "lose" Tom's dad's tissue in order to avoid litigation?
I think I'd be suspicious that they lost the tons of copies that they had.
9) What'd you think of Robbin' Rob and him stealing the "novelty gene" grant idea?
I'm guessing that probably does happen but probably not too often. I can't believe he wouldn't change it at all though, that seems super risky.
10) Mrs. Diehl had quite the reaction to being asked for genetic testing. Do you think she went overboard? Or was her reaction justified?
If it's something she has a big fear of I could see it. Though maybe she already knows something.
11) Could you imagine randomly figuring out a drug could cure drug addiction like the story of Josh and Adam? If you were Josh would you go ahead testing the hypothesis or try to do it properly with grants and approvals?
I don't think it cures addiction though, I think it causes them to be more mature which causes greater self control.
12) Have you heard of chimerism before? How strange to think that one person could have two types of DNA!
It was on House :)
13) What are they taking long bones from dead people for?!?
Hrm. I'm guessing they're using the bone marrow for something. Maybe the stem cell research that was mentioned. Or they're scanning the marrow for people with special traits.

Synopsis:
Welcome to our genetic world.
Fast, furious, and out of control.
This is not the world of the future --- it's the world right now.
Is a loved one missing some body parts? Are blondes becoming extinct? Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species? Humans and chimpanzees differ in only 400 genes; is that why an adult human being resembles a chimp fetus? And should that worry us? There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction --- is it worse than the disease?
We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps; a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars; test our spouses for genetic maladies and even frame someone for a genetic crime.
We live in a time when one fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else, and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes ...
Devilishly clever, Next blends fact and fiction into a breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems, and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn. Next challenges our sense of reality and notions of morality. Balancing the comic and bizarre with the genuinely frightening and disturbing, Next shatters our assumptions, and reveals shocking new choices where we least expect.
The future is closer than you think. Get used to it
