Even as a gamer I probably shouldn't find today's XKCD as funny as I do, but for some reason it's hilarious.

As usual I'm pretty lost by the mouseover text though.

Kristen | 1179 comments Lol. I think you have every right to find this hilarious. Because it is. Board game jokes in general are pretty funny, but this one is done really well. I love the phrasing of the caption.

Ok, not just me then. YAY! :)

In addition to agreeing that the joke is particularly well done in general I also like it because it reminds me of playing games with people who seem to playing towards their own unique goal (which can be either really amusing or really annoying).

Kristen | 1179 comments Playing board games with new people is always a strange experience. If you ever play Monopoly with someone new, you have to make sure that you ask them how they handle Free Parking. Everyone does it differently.

True. Asking about the auction rule 90% of the world forgets about is good too, as anyone who has actually tried it generally refuses to play without it after that.

In retrospect one of the funniest gaming experiences I had was when two of my friends tried to teach me and a forth an esoteric four player trick-taking card game. The game itself would've been complicated enough to learn in the first place, but after a very confusing half hour or so we realized the two teachers were explaining different (and contradictory) rule variations without knowing it.

This amuses me greatly. I am totally reading "smartphone" as "pokedex" from now on.

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) I like "is guilty and everyone knows it" XD 'Cause it's usually true.

And yes. Smartphones are now pokedex. I will now refer to mine as such. lol

This had me cracking up. I always love jokes that play around with children's songs/etc.

Add in the word "program" after "computer" and this scene could totally be taken from my job. Fantastic strip.

Mary Catelli | 994 comments Huh? Makes perfect sense. And logic. What is illogical about its being haunted? Does it fail to distribute the middle term? Does it commit the fallacy of exclusive premises? Or argumentum ad misericordiam?

Heh. Be careful to ask for what you actually want...

Hahahahaha! Next panel: "That star could have been gone for close to a whole decade."

And Randal's doing a book in the vein of his what if column!

Seriously wrong but pretty hilarious.

Kristen | 1179 comments The word problems that they make for probability are some of the weirdest things. There is almost always one about having a drawer full of different colors of socks and your chances of getting a matching pair. What? Who does that? My chances of getting a matching pair of socks is 100% because 1. all of my socks are the same and 2. I usually look at my socks before putting them on.

Yeah, I always found those baffling too. 1) I pair my socks and 2) it's never too dark in the morning for me not to tell black socks from white.

Of course I prefer both of the above to the twisted sense of humor of the people who write my stats tests - there are often questions about students taking that exact test and figuring out how many will fail.

message 16: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments My statistics teacher would do the same thing-based on actual results from last year's students. He also liked to include intentionally outdated technologies or fads. We had questions about those CD order services that they had back in the 90's, MySpace and other such things. It made the tests more fun.

That does sound fun.

My probability teacher used her eccentric friend as an example a lot. Like her friend's ball pit. Or her friend's collection of this that and the other thing. Always fun.
