Does anyone know of any good books with either Martel or Charlemagne as characters? Two of the greatest figures in history and I've come up with nothing so far.

I hate to blatantly self-promote, but I just published Anvil of God, Book One of the Carolingian Chronicles. It's the story of what happens to Charles The Hammer's family in the wake of his death. Here's its page on GR:

Hope you like it!

Anvil of God is very good, I recommend it.Another one about the lineage is The Cross and the Dragon by Kim Rendfield I think..it has to do with Charlemagne and Roland..
Kathleen, based on the description The Cross and the Dragon appears to be an historical fantasy, or if not, that it include fantasy elements.

We do allow authors to mention their books to members if they are asking for a rec and your book matches the request.
As long as the books are straight hist fic and not fantasy, romance etc.. and yours appears to be straight HF so it is okay for you to recommend it.
Thanks Terri. Given all the drama over self-promotion, I try to be careful. BTW, I have trouble looking at you the same way after the Anti Bodice Rippers episode! ;)
Some shameless self promotion *blush*Pride and Honour-The Battle for Saxony is set in the dark ages. Charlemagne's war against the Langobards, Moors, Bavarians and Saxons.

Thanks for Anvil of God - it's on my 'to read' list now.
Darcy wrote: "Kathleen, based on the description The Cross and the Dragon appears to be an historical fantasy, or if not, that it include fantasy elements."I did not think it was a fantasy nor do I read fantasy.. there was the myth of the Dragon of Roncevaux but that was just early medieval people's beliefs..Not too different from Henry VII naming his son Arthur as he descended from him..Just Dragon myth instead of Merlin
Charlemagne and his line were done well and I thought the book was good..

looking at that now Nathaniel..my maternal Faunt lineage(lenfant) connected to Pepin and worked for Plantagenet kings 1240-1587 so read in those directions.. Norman Irish..

Interesting. I'm set to start Pride and Honour - The Battle for Saxony. I was having trouble with my new Kindle Paperwhite and in dealing with C.S. she suggested I try out downloading a couple of freebies to see if everything was working okay. My eye happened to fall on your book. Haven't beeen conservant with Charlesmagne since 4th or 5th grade. Really looking forward to it. Too bad for you that it's a freebie but at least I know of you as a writer. I love historical fiction.
Andre Norton's Huon of the Horn is a novel based on some of the legends surrounding Charlemagne. More of a fantasy instead of historical fiction.
Dennis wrote: "Andre Norton's Huon of the Horn is a novel based on some of the legends surrounding Charlemagne."I ordered that yesterday. It's a translation of a medieval romance*, close to the original I understand. Charlemagne himself not a big presence.
*romance in the old sense

Huon de Bordeaux is in the
Legends of Charlemagne by Thomas Bulfinch
I'm after this The English Charlemagne Romances, Part IX: The Boke of Duke Huon of Bordeux: E.S. 43, 50 but in the meantime Andre Norton's update of this 16thc translation was the cheap option.

The good kind of romance. :)
I think everyone interested in fiction about Charlemagne should consider starting with The Song of Roland which is a highly fictionalised, verse account of the battle of Roncaveaux in 778 CE.
This is the first time I've seen this thread. Very excited. I'm about to marry a Martel who has traced his ancestry back to Charles. Adding some of these books to my TBR list!

I have just finished a novel about Charles "Martel", and am looking for beta readers. So, free! If you would like a pdf, please let me know at donmakerauthor@gmail.com. Naturally, I'm looking for comments that might help improve it, but would sincerely appreciate honest reviews when it's published. The working title is "The Savior of Europe", but I'm open to suggestions on that as well.

It's the Kingdom of Naples series, starting with The Girl Who Would Be Queen, then The Girl Who Tempted Fortune, and I'm currently writing The Girl Who Sold Her Crown. If we're talking about the same Charles Martel, of the Angevin line from King Louis ll of Naples.

The Hungarian Charles Martel is a different person. Confusing; but that's the way it is.
