Anyone want to indulge in a Book of the Month for Huns and Hoydens?

We would nominate some books, poll to figure out which one is most popular, read it, and have discussions. Once a month or every other month or what is most convenient.

We could make it a free-for-all or have themes. Contemporary Fiction, Contemporary Nonfiction, Classic Nonfiction, and Classic Fiction -- picking some year to divide. Or finer than that. Steampunk, say. Or Robert A. Heinlein, Rudyard Kipling, or maybe even Sarah Hoyt.

Emily | 16 comments okay by me. How about one of Ringo's series. Special Circumstances, Troy Rising or Black Tide. Or one of David Weber's?

Julie Pascal (synova) | 2 comments I think it would be fun to read some of the classics together, such as Heinlein. But I'm sure that there are no end to eclectic favorites that people would like to share with others. It might be interesting to read something that I'd otherwise never have tried.

We probably are all here because we like Sarah's books, right? So talking about one of her books seems obvious. OTOH, will people feel ever so slightly inhibited from discussing the book (whatever it is) openly?

Karl | 7 comments If you want something eclectic, how about Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell and its sequels? That's the least violent space opera ever (the coming of age of a merchant ship crewman).

OTOH, if we want to recommend eclectic favorites, we do have the bookshelves, and can open threads to recommend specific books to each other.

Or possibly have threads dedicated just to recommending books or asking for specific types of books.

An ecletic book might, to be sure, be something a group of us would enjoy, but we could read it on our own as well.

Disclaimer: I know Nathan Lowell, and he is a very nice fellow.
And I would love to get more people reading his books. It's been a while since I revisited Quarter Share (and I've never read / listened to the last one: Owner's Share).
But let's do that one our second month. First month should be a classic, and my vote is on either Heinlein's "The Puppet Masters" or one of the juveniles. It would be a good excuse to finally read "Citizen of the Galaxy".
So, my vote is, start in December with a classic. Then Quarter Share (free in audio from podiobooks.com or available at Amazon) for January. That gives us a few weeks to set up polls/voting, gauge interest, etc. for February, and then we're rolling.

Laura Montgomery | 39 comments Any interest in Door Into Summer? I haven't reread that in ages.
I like the idea of Quarter Share in January.
Also, Mary's idea of asking for specific types of books sounds great.

I shall set up our first poll. It shall consist of a question about whether we want types per month, and if so, what kind.

here we go!

Poll is completed. Specific themes it is.

looks at calender, looks at this topic.

I, by fiat, declare that for December, we shall do Classic SF as the theme. We shall garner nominees this week, and next week, poll on them.

We shall also have a thread where we gather up suggested themes and then pick one.

for January (and henceforth with month appropriate changes).

1. We nominate themes the first week in December
2. We vote on themes second week.
3. We nominate books, third week.
4. We vote on books, fourth week.
