Brittany | 11 comments Hello! So while I love to read I work a very repetative job (research lab). Recently I've discovered the joys of multi-tasking...allowing me to do my experiments AND tavel in space. ^_~.

I figure this would be a great place to talk about favorite audiobooks, narrators, etc.

Currently I'm listening to 2 series, both with fantastic narration.

Dock 5 Series By Linnea Sinclair Gabriel's Ghost (Dock Five Universe, #1) by Linnea Sinclair

Sirantha Jax series by Ann Aguirre Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre

I wish the star doc series by S L Viehl had audiobooks. Stardoc (Stardoc, #1) by S.L. Viehl

Riley (ramore) | 46 comments I really enjoyed the first two Sirantha Jax audiobooks, but then had to go to print for #3. I'm back to audio on #4, but after that I think it is all print again. The series is worth listening to or reading!

I also liked Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold.

I just bought Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach, but it is still in the ipod queue.

Shards of Honor (Vorkosigan Saga, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold Fortune's Pawn (Paradox, #1) by Rachel Bach

Brittany | 11 comments Yeah. I was bummed that Doubleblind is only in print. I'm reading that one now and then jumping back to audio for Killbox.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm going to add those to my wish list :).

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments I have some codes for free copies of my SFR audio books if anyone is interested. These are through Audible. Just pop me an email at pauline@paulinebjones.com with SFR audio book in the subject line. :-)

(I got Agent of Change in audio and am not in love with the narration. :-( )

message 5: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 11 comments That's awesome Pauline, I'll def shoot you an e-mail =). Thanks!

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments You are most welcome! Hope you enjoy! I'm like you, I like the SFR audio books. :-)

Brittany | 11 comments The way I got into it was interesting. I've always read print books (and I still love them), but I set up my 2013 reading challenge on goodreads and realized a few months ago how far behind I had gotten. That's when I decided to multi-task and listen at work (I'm still behind, but catching up fast!).

I signed up for Audible on a whim. I noticed with the first few books I would zone out from time to time and miss parts, but once I got the hang of listening to my books it has gotten so much better. I especially love how theatrical it can get, like when a narrator adds an accent I never would have (I can't think in accents *sad face*) it just makes the story so much more theatrical. There is a scene in Clockwork Prince (YA-fantasy) where Ed Westwick put so much emotion into a character's monologue that I teared up. I don't think I would have gotten all the emotion reading it myself. (plus his voice is dreamy, so that helped too!) I feel more involved when I'm listening (unless the narrator is awful in which case I jump back to the print).

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments Years ago, I tried audio books and just didn't enjoy them, but recently, I tried them again and now I love them. I listen at night to go to sleep. I have relisten to a lot - LOL - but that's part of the fun. I also listen to them in the car. And you are right, there is a whole different level of "reading" involved in an audio book. :-)

Brittany | 11 comments So I downloaded "The Key" and I'll be listening to it probably next week. I wasn't a big fan of the narrator (based on the sample), but I am OCD about reading books out of order, haha. Thanks again! I'll be sure to review it as soon as I'm done.

Also I just finished Gabriel's Ghost by Linnea Sinclair . . . FANTASTIC! The narrator was great and the story very entertaining. Can't wait for my Audible credits to reset so I can get #2.

message 10: by Riley (new)

Riley (ramore) | 46 comments Brittany, you are not the only one who is affected by a good narration. However, yesterday, when I was in my car and listening I did more than just 'tear up'. I pretty much bawled for 5 miles. Good thing I was headed home!
I'm glad you like Gabriel's Ghost. I love all of Linnea Sinclair's books, not just the Doc 5 series. I think Games of Command is my favorite.

message 11: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 11 comments I have that one on my TBR. I plan to read all her SFR books I think.

Oh no! Good thing no one was around. Other drivers probably thought you were crazy, haha. But yes. A good narrator makes a book so real! I almost prefer it to a movie. I'm kind of ADD (not really, just figure of speaking), so I tend to lose focus in a movie, but a good audiobook that allows me to multi-task is so entertaining to me.

Brittany | 11 comments BTW, reading SFR has given me unrealistic expectations for my dating life =(.

message 13: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments I had a hard time with The Key narrator at first, too. She seemed to talk so slow, but as I got used to hearing someone else reading my words, it got better. It is very disconcerting to hear someone else read your words! Would you like another code? I have a few left. I've gotten a lot of good feedback on Girl Gone Nova narrator. :-)

Brittany | 11 comments So I own a Nook, not a Kindle, but I've noticed with Audible sometimes getting the Kindle version first reduces the audiobook price so that the combined price of book+audio is cheaper than a credit.

I got Close Liaisons by Anna Zaires free for Kindle and then the audiobook was only $1.99! Close Liaisons (The Krinar Chronicles #1) by Anna Zaires

I don't know if the book will be any good, but SFR for that price, how could I say no?! I found a few other SFR for free on Kindle (no audio though *sad face*). I ended up downloading a kindle app on my phone =). I may be a Kindle convert since the prices/selection are better and the added benefit of cheaper audiobooks!

Here are the other books I found for free. I have no idea how good they are because I haven't read any of these yet, but the price is right! Marked for Vengeance (Alyx Rayer Chronicles, #1) by S.J. Pierce The Spider and the Fly by C.E. Stalbaum How to Date an Alien (My Alien Romance, #1) by Magan Vernon

message 16: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments Several of my books have this deal, too.

Steamrolled is $3.49
Tangled in Time is $1.99
Kicking Ashe is $1.99
The Key is $3.49

They have Girl Gone Nova whispersynch ready, but have not discounted it yet, for some reason.

Like you, have the app on my phone and also on my iPad. Got some great deals this way. :-)

message 17: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 11 comments Awesome, thanks for the heads up =). I'll have to check those out when I finish books 1 and 2!

If the Kindle Paper white goes on sale this year I may grab one and pass my Nook on to my mom. She never would let me buy her an e-reader (moms are so silly about accepting gifts) but if it's a hand-me-down she might go for it, haha!

message 18: by Riley (new)

Riley (ramore) | 46 comments I always do the Kindle + Audible price compare before I buy an audiobook. Yeah, there are some really good deals that way!

I started with Nook too, but had issues that B&N refused to resolve. I finally bought a Nexus 7. I have both Nook and Kindle apps loaded on it and it works great! I find I like the Amazon site much better than B&N. And often what is free on one site is also free on the other. So you can pick your favorite format!

message 19: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments Brittany, the PaperWhite is an awesome reader. I've used everything (but the Nook LOL) from the Rocket eReader (ouch) and it is my favorite for a more book-like reading experience. I also use my iPad, but in bright light and for battery life? It's a gem.

As for the Amazon site, you just can't beat it for customer service and the searching capabilities. I've also been an Amazon customer for forever. LOL

message 20: by Riley (new)

Riley (ramore) | 46 comments Thought of another series for the SFR list. L.K. Rigel's Apocalypto series. The first book is free on Amazon! I've read the first two books so far.
Space Junque (Apocalypto, #1) by L.K. Rigel Spiderwork (Apocalypto, #2) by L.K. Rigel

Brittany | 11 comments I downloaded it! Thanks for the recommendation =).

Echo (mrsbookmark) | 11 comments I can vouch for Girl Gone Nova as a good one.Girl Gone Nova Audible.

Also, a bit off the track, but I'm a huge fan of old radio dramas. There is lots of SF stuff that's great for multitasking background atmosphere. Girl Gone Nova by Pauline Baird Jones

message 23: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments Oh, thanks for the kind words and yes, old radio dramas are very fun! I've gotten some from Old Time Radio. :-)

Thanks for mentioning this. I've actually been looking for "The Key" for some time now, but for some reason, all I was getting on Amazon was a listing for the print version, which they didn't have. So I didn't know it was on Kindle (which I wondered about, and found very frustrating). Then I clicked on the link you left, and there was a link to the Kindle version of "The Key"! So now I can finally start reading them. Thanks so much—and a slap in the face to Amazon!

message 25: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments The reason you might have had problems, my publisher closed in July (one partner died), so I regained control. No reason to release print when it had been out there so long, so I only released digital. I did not know the print and digital weren't linked (the reviews and such all are!). Glad you found it! Now I'm wondering how to check that on my other books!

message 26: by TKay (new)

TKay (tkaymichel) | 12 comments I'm glad I found it, too. I heard about this book a while back & have wanted to read it ever since. Look forward to enjoying it.

Two things, there is a Best Science Fiction Romance Audiobooks list https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9... and also Audible is having a 50% off sale for members April 18th, 2016. (Hope that's ok to mention here?)
