um...lemme think. *taps chin* I like it when the plot is original, and Ooh if they have awesome female characters :D Like Celaena Sardothian :D and yes, the cover also must be brilliant :P It's a necessity. um..*taps chin again* I hate love at first sight stories...it's annoying and unrealistic..and..uh..triangles don't make sense and they only work for SOME books(none of which I read so far tho) ...aaand i'll have to get back to you laterXD can't think of any more
what i really crave in a book is just to read about two characters and just go "PLEASE LET THEM BE TOGETHER THEY ARE SO CUTE" and then when you read on and there is no triangles or other shapes XD
If you are talking about walking around aimlessly in a library then I would have to say the cover. -_- As horrible as that sounds, it is what draws a person in. Then if the title agrees with what I am feeling at the particular moment--whether it be annoyance, angst, happiness, or mysteriousness, I turn the book around to either read the reviews or synopsis. Then comes opening it up to the first chapter. If I can tolerate the first sentence, I move on to the rest of the paragraph. Finally I either squeal with joy or throw it across the room. (Only the former is accurate.)
Things that I like in a book are those wonderfully odd phrases and sentences or paragraphs that make you just want to sigh in slow delight and read them over and over with a big wistful smile on your face. I love those books which are so different and brilliant and away from normal books that they seem to float around like wisps of mist and things with wings. I like the books that are a little fairy-tale-ish. So... yeah.
oh yes THOSE books
i don't know if you've read the iron king but i think you'd love it!
i love a what i call "one-off-book" not in a bad way like ugh i don't normally read these but like
really rare amazing books that are also from a genre i don't normally read from.

"this changes her/his life"
"they meet a dangerous stranger..."
stuff like that.
and even though it's cliche it sometimes draws me in.
and i know i shouldn't really but still i judge books a little on their cover.
and other things as well.
but what about you?
