Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments In preparation for the Armchair Travelers Challenge, I'm running several DC threads where we can put together a list of books or series that are set in the different continents or European cities.

I, for one, will be checking these threads for suggestions.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I'm having problems with this continent. So far my options are:

Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Sphinx (Egypt)
Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen

Kasia I can recommend:

Out of Africa was really good Briansgirl.
The Plague - Classic but not boring at all. Set in Algeria.
Things Fall Apart - Loved it!
The Poisonwood Bible - Intense epic book.
The Power of One
In Desert and Wilderness - AWESOME adventures, it's YA, but it's really good. (There's a movie based on it, but nothing can thump the book.)
Heart of Darkness and other stuff by Joseph Conrad (but it'a a bit dated and the language can get really rich at times).
Congo - If you don't mind being scared. I liked the movie better though.

I loved the movie so figured the book would be good. I just don't consider it a quick read. I figured it might take me awhile to read this one.

Kasia No, I wouldn't say it's a quick read either. But to tell you the truth - I liked it better than the movie (despite it featuring Redford and Streep). So once you have some time to spare...

That's just it... I'd love to read it to. But I expect it would take 2 weeks like the Tom Clancy novel did. I can't read 10+ books a month if one book takes me 2 weeks. Yet my options for Africa are slim. Most romance novels aren't set here. I've got Harlequins for Austalia and an old Harlequin series set througout Europe. But Africa and South America are tougher. I got 2 Indiana Jones books, one set in Peru and one in Egypt but I wasn't sure I wanted to read both back-to-back.

If I do read Out of Africa... I'll reward myself with the movie, which I have seen before. I'm doing that will all movies based on books. I'm rewarding myself with the movie after reading it. I do that to motivate my kids too. My only exception to that was that I had to watch Pride & Prejudice first as I was getting lost in the language of the book and having trouble following the plot, so watched the movie first.

Kasia Things Fall Apart was exceptionally good as well - and it's way shorter.

Danielle (ielfling) I picked Morocco as my country and found Lulu in Marrakech. Again, not an author I've read before but it looked interesting!

Briansgirl, if you're interested in Harlequins set in Africa, I've found reference to one - Her Very Special Boss.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Thanks Danielle. Unfortunately I don't have it and checked online and my library doesn't either. Drat.

Danielle (ielfling) Oh rats, sorry to get your hopes up :) we have that in our library, not much help to you, though!

Barbara ★ | 3941 comments If you like really adventurous books, Wilbur Smith writes fantastic novels pertaining to Africa. I've read all of these and enjoyed them immensely.

He has an Egypt series: (in no particular order)
The Quest
Warlock A Novel of Ancient Egypt
River God A Novel of Ancient Egypt
The Seventh Scroll

South Africa/Zimbabwe area:
Men of Men
Blue Horizon

English Privateers that end up in Africa:
Birds of Prey
Monsoon

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I found an antique harlequin set in Africa, written in 1977.
Whistling Thorn
