Quotes and discussion on amnesia

ARIA stands for Alien Retrograde Infectious Amnesia but this discussion doesn't have to be restricted to alien initiation of amnesia. No one has used the concept of infectious amnesia before partly because it doesn't actually exist, thank goodness. This makes this trilogy unique - promotional gold dust apparently!
My question is that a writer reviewing ARIA: Left Luggage somewhere mentioned the phrase: "Without our memories, who are we?" The more I think about that the deeper it becomes. I want a) for peoples' ideas related to that and amnesia, and b) who originated that phrase as I'd like to use as a puff on the final book. Ideas please?
