One of my favourite books in this area is Leonard Bloomfield's Language. It's old (1930s), but contains a thorough description of a vast number of areas that are being studied by linguists even today. The guy's knowledge is impressive.
Language, by Bloomsfield. Thanks, I'll check the library on that one.Old in linguistics? Pierce and Saussure didn't get to 1920! :) And still are regarded as classic language literature.
Thanks for the tip.
Introducing myself. I've been reading in linguistics for about 58 years. Right now I'm reading 2 books by McWhorter on Creolistics as well as reading Kweyol poetry. Other languages as well as linguistics in general. This group looks more recently active than another one I looked at. Any response will be appreciated.

I'm reading up on linguistics and need to get a start up on easy-to-get-your-head-around books.
