Pachanka | 3 comments Hello!

I'm reading up on linguistics and need to get a start up on easy-to-get-your-head-around books.

Any opinions? Comments? Recommendations?

Odile (qwallath) | 1 comments One of my favourite books in this area is Leonard Bloomfield's Language. It's old (1930s), but contains a thorough description of a vast number of areas that are being studied by linguists even today. The guy's knowledge is impressive.

Pachanka | 3 comments Language, by Bloomsfield. Thanks, I'll check the library on that one.

Old in linguistics? Pierce and Saussure didn't get to 1920! :) And still are regarded as classic language literature.

Thanks for the tip.

Junichi_fin94 | 1 comments In my opinion a handy book for start would be The Study of Language, written by George Yule.

Pat Barrett | 1 comments Introducing myself. I've been reading in linguistics for about 58 years. Right now I'm reading 2 books by McWhorter on Creolistics as well as reading Kweyol poetry. Other languages as well as linguistics in general. This group looks more recently active than another one I looked at. Any response will be appreciated.
