While doing some Christmas present shopping in The Works I couldn't resist picking up this for myself (it was £1.99 - amazon are selling it for £8.39!):
Ice Bear: A Natural and Unnatural History of the Polar Bear by Kieran Mulvaney
Oh how I wished I could do that this month, but coming from a big family I don't think I'm able to get any books this month. Was only able to get two kindle books. Hopefully it's better next month.

After a couiple of years I gave up trying to find all 10 volumes of Roger Zelazny Chronicles of Amber. Treated myself to the massive omnibus edition using an Amazon 30% off coupon. The Great Book of Amber

Well I hope you enjoy them! He does have a love for battles so they're quite 'blokey' books in that regard but he really seems to capture historical periods brilliantly, his writing is superb.I found another of a series of local nature books today, The Butterflies of Essex, to go alongside my copies of The Dragonflies of Essex, The Bumblebees of Essex and The Mammals of Essex. Lovely books to refer to, lots of distribution maps for different species around the county.
My friend and I went to the bookstore this week and got some books from the Bargain aisle and new in a UF series full price
My friends and I went to our favorite bookstore last night (Prairie Lights in Iowa City). This is a dangerous place for me. One of my friends pointed out a beautiful new book to me
. I couldn't resist. It is a beautiful book, full of photos and Beatrix Potter's paintings and drawings. I also bought
.
Oooooh! Sally, I'm jealous! I would love to have that Beatrix Potter book in my collection. I recently read a great mystery series by Susan Wittig Albert where Beatrix Potter is the main character. FYI, the first in the series is The Tale of Hill Top Farm.

"Nice! There's a similar book by Richard Mabey, called Weeds: How Vagabond Plants Gatecrashed Civilisation and Changed the Way We Think About Nature.
This week I bought a copy of the hardback edition of The Hobbit - I have a paperback but I'd wanted a nice edition to go with my set of the Lord Of The Rings books for ages.
I didn't think too much about the book bingeing I did on Cyber Sunday, but my orders keep on arriving. Today I got:

The last of my used books December order has arrived:
. The really cool thing about that last book is that it's autographed! And I didn't know it was signed when I ordered it! :-)

Good that you got a signed book Joseph, I like it when you find things like that! This evening in my local Oxfam shop I found a copy of The Earth: An Intimate History by Richard Fortey, yet another Folio Society edition for my burgeoning collection! I saw a copy there at the start of the year but didn't buy it and regretted it so this time I didn't hesitate.
Last weekend I bought a few books when I went to visit my brother - I found a copy of a little Shire booklet, The Dipper by Stephanie J. Tyler in the Oxfam bookshop, and I also bought two books for a pound in a British Red Cross charity shop -
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway and Papillon by Henri Charrière
Just got for Christmas from my wonderful daughter "Dark Witch" book 1 of the cousins O'Dwyer trilogy.
The box of books I ordered from Doubleday books 5for $1.00 plus postage on Nov 29th never showed up. There were 3 books I was going to give as gifts. I e messages Doubleday 5 times in the week before Christmas and I never got a reply except the message that they got my message but the computers were down. Thy got my money, I got nothing.
Over 70 new books this month - my friend sent me over 60 I ordered from her. Used to her, new to me since I haven't read them.
These are the last 2013 additions to my library.
Here's to wishing everyone a Great, memorable, joyous and safe 2014!!!
I was introduced to a great used book store last month. My last book purchases of the year were two John Grisham hardbacks. The Rainmaker and The Racketeer
Hope you have a good New Year Thom, and everyone else!Lovely to find a new used bookshop Kadijah, I get sillily excited when I visit one for the first time as you just don't know what you might find!
I think I've made my last purchases of 2013 now; I'd though of catching the bus to Maldon to look around the bookshops there but it looks set to rain heavily today and I don't feel inclined to travel far. I may look around town later after waiting in for a parcel though.
At the start of the week I bought three books for £1 in a charity shop:
Snuff Fiction by Robert Rankin
Slaughterhouse Five or the Children's Crusade by Kurt Vonnegut
House of Cards by Michael Dobbs
but last night I ordered a couple of used books from amazon from the nature series I collect:
British Larks, Pipits And Wagtails by Eric Simms
Nature Conservation by Peter Marren
both paperbacks, the hardbacks that I prefer are more expensive - the Larks book tends to be several hundred pounds for a hardback copy but only £10-20 for the paperback as the collectors concentrate on hardcovers (though in some cases, like my British Bats book, the paperbacks can go for as much as £100!).
I just got given
,
,
,and
by my mother, who is an even bigger reader than I am. They were in her throw away pile (yes, she has a THROW AWAY pile, can you believe that?).
In Geelong, Australia it is already 2014 (an hour already).... Here's to wishing everyone on Goodreads a fantastic New Year! 2014 can be an even better reading year!
The postmistress called to tell me I had a package at the post office (an advantage of living in a small Iowa town!). It contained
,
, and
. The Baedeker's is a reproduction of a 1937 guidebook, complete with foldout maps. This book is going to be great fun to browse.
I made no purchases in December. I was given a copy of The Dark Witch part one by Nora Roberts by my daughter. The box of books I ordered from Doubleday books on November never showed up though they took money out of my checking account right away as I had used my debit card. Very pissed. Between my daughter and myself we had culled about 10 boxes of books that we took to a local library to donate for the next library book sale that I hope to attend.
