The missing Carmilla! We now know she's out at night; although we don't know for what purpose. It reminds me of the locked door mysteries. The household seems easily appeased by the sleepwalking explanation. Maybe it's a case of wanting to believe because anything else is unthinkable.
I thought the sleepwalking scene because it recalls to mind Dracula in which Lucy had the habit of sleep walking. And there was a similar scene in which she wandered off in a sleep walking state and Mina had to find her. Bram Stocker had read Carmilla before writing Dracula and so I think we can see the way in which this story influenced him within his own writing. The idea of the sleepwalking does provide a nice safe, and rational explanation for what otherwise cannot be explained.
It also makes me think, I cannot recall exactly what chapter it was in, but it was around the time in which the strange disease began to spread that someone made a remark that part of the house where Carmilla's room it was haunted because a ghostly looking female figure was seen in the night.
