This is a new one for me so I am looking forward to it - I have heard some good things about the series
When I was about 25 pages in a was a little bored, but there was something that kept me reading. CeeCee was mildly interesting, the crime much more, or maybe it was the people that were involved with it.At this point I was thinking of giving it up, but kept reading. I made it to page 98, when I put the book aside and picked up another. I was only a little more interested. CeeCee was still the same, I wanted to know more about her relationship with the nun. Max was about the same, slightly interesting and I wanted to know more about his past and how he came to be with Jimmy.
However when I went to pick up the book to keep reading I made it 2 more pages and realized that while I wanted to know more it wasn't enough to keep me reading. In the end this one just wasn't for me.
This for me was one of my favorite books of the year. I loved it. It's dark and very different. It was right up my alley cuz I like the dark pschological type books. Not really what I was expecting when I thought shifter book. I was fascinated with the character she had created with Max. Part old school horror type werewolf, part abused child still in a dysfunctional relationship w/his abuser and then part alpha hiding down there somewhere. There are some really powerful scenes, imo, towards the end where you see Max, this cold blooded killer, in these horrible, vulnerable child like moments. I couldn't stand CeeCee. I loved her back story though and I like an author who will make her MC's unlikeable. I get why she is like she is but I hated how she is often one more abuser in Max's life.
There is no hea at the end of this book. These two have a long, messed up road to travel together.
@ALisa Thanks for letting me know about the lack of an hea at the end...In PNR I rather expect that lol@Darcy complete opposite ends lol I wonder what I will think :-)

Dawn wrote: "@Darcy complete opposite ends lol I wonder what I will think :-)"I hope you are more on Alisa's end than mine.
@Dawn....no they can't be read out of order. You will be really confused. It's labeled pnr but it's not at all what you normally consider pnr. It's pretty dark. The MC's are all kinds of messed up. If I had to compare it to something in overall tone it would Downside Ghosts.
Where is Sandra? She's the one who encouraged me to read this. She should be over here backing me & Max up. :)

Anyway Thanks!

Dawn wrote: "It is just so wacky...I would rather they buy the first one or two than start so far into a series"You really can't start that late in the series. You would understand the plot of the book but you would miss the psychological stuff of how Max got from abused victim to alpha. Too me that is the crust of the series. Unfortunately it's an expensive series and not one I can ever find at used bookstores etc. I bought mine as used books off of Amazon.
LOL. I'm here ;)I would classify it as UF and not PNR. Definitely more dark than you'd expect from a PNR. I've only read the first 2, and rated them both 4, Steph B got me into it and she's read all of them, I think.
Book #5
moves on from Max & CeeCee as the main couple, so whilst you would miss the background, you may be able to start with the books your library has, Dawn.
Max & CeeCee are still a part of book five & on & more secrets come out so they shouldn't be read first

Gideon kicks off a paranormal romance series with intriguing characters and zippy action. Det. Charlotte Caissie has spent years working homicides for the New Orleans PD. She links a savagely mutilated murder victim to crime boss Jimmy Legere, and suspects Legere’s enforcer, Max Savoie, might know more than he’s telling about the attack. Max has lusted after Charlotte for years, and after Max saves her from would-be rapists and reveals he’s the hero who once rescued her from kidnappers, Charlotte starts to share his feelings. Despite Max’s monstrous shape-shifting abilities and probable involvement in her case, they soon surrender to mutual attraction. Charlotte walks a razor-fine line with her professional ethics and romantic life, but Gideon deftly avoids writing herself into corners and masters the tension required to keep her complex and engaging story moving.
