This book was chosen because our genre was classics and the theme is Harlem Renaissance. This book fits in both categories. This thread is where we will discuss this book.

Veronica (veraj121) | 71 comments I read this book in college - African American Lit ( in the late 90's). I look forward to revisiting this book

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Glad to have you join us Veronica!

I just added a video for the documentary Dark Girls . It will be interesting to compare the attitudes of today with the attitudes we read about in Wallace's book written 85 years ago. How far have we come?

Beverly I have read The Blacker The Berry many years ago. This is one of my favorites from the Harlem Renaissance (and the Harlem Renaissance is my fav writing period). I have actually read this book twice and it is rarely rare that I read a book more than once but each time I read this book (as with most of the HR) is how universal and current the themes are.

A book on the subject that was read and discussed at my local bookclub that generated a lot of conversation was:

Don't Play in the Sun: One Woman's Journey Through the Color Complex by Marita Golden

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 142 comments Looking forward to the discussion here! I am so excited to begin reading this book. I've already put in my request and should be picking it up soon at my local library!

That is what I love about HF is that its themes are universal and current. You'd be surprise how much you can understand about present day issues through history be it fiction or non-fiction.

I'm surprised I've never hear of it (as if I've read every book every, how arrogant of me). The title truly enticed me because I being a dark-skinned woman, I too have heard many variations of don't play in he sun. Naturally I clicked on the link and checked out the reviews (mostly positive) and then read an excerpt from Amazon. I definitely think that will be my next read. I would love to read something like that. I just hope it isn't one of those kind of colorism books where the author obviously suffers from a complex and think that all light-skinned women are evil! lol. In fact this has motivated me about a mini blog post in our folder "lets blog about it". Thanks for the link Beverly!

Kisha -
I think you will like this book as it also goes into a dialogue with light-skinned women, it is not a bitter book but you will nod your head and chuckle at some of the observations and overall I think this book helped for my book discussion group to have a more honest discussion.

Veronica (veraj121) | 71 comments The Black Renaissance is one of my most favorite time period for literature and the arts. Many of the books are so beautifully written. I grew up in the Bronx. But my paternal grandparents are Harlemites. My dad was born and raised in one of the historical buildings in Harlem - Graham Court ( Harlem version of the Dakota) I've read many books in the time. My grandparents were part of this culture and era ( both were Southerners who migrated to NYC ). I was very close to my grandparents and this era reminds me of them.

That's super cool to have a connection to history. A great history as well. It's the most artistic movement ever and it kicked down the doors for many voices to be heard to this day. I love this era. It should be a holiday or acknowledged by a month (just not february lol)
