Elizabeth (persephone17) Here's the book for December! I hope everyone enjoys reading it.
Description: When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf (Bigby Wolf), to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.
Happy reading!

Elizabeth (persephone17) I got the first three volumes of this at the library today. :)

Katie | 45 comments Just read it, it was interesting enough, got the first 4 through the library, so lets give the next 3 a try!

Elizabeth (persephone17) I finished the first volume, and it was pretty good! It's like a 40s murder mystery with fairy tale characters. I also got the next two volumes, so I'll be reading those soon. ^_^

That seems to be a pattern ;) But it was a quick read so makes sense.

Elizabeth (persephone17) So, what did everyone else think of Fables? How much of it did you guys read? So far, I've read Volumes 1-3.

Cortney Jean I'm a little late to the discussion, but I picked this up from the library for a quick read and was pleasantly surprised. I don't think I would have picked this up if it wasn't for IGGPPBC.

The art was really interesting to me because it was so reminiscent of Silver Age comics. I really like mystery (I've only read vol. 1) and was scouring the frames to figure it out before the "parlor scene," but I sadly don't seem to have Sherlock Holmes level deduction skills.

Reading this made me think of a grungier Once Upon a Time (I would say this is much better).

Are the other volumes mysteries as well? Or what are they about? I'm curious to read some more.

I loved the Silver Age look too....one of the best parts of the comic, to me. I'm glad we got you to read something you otherwise probably wouldn't have!
I agree about the Once Upon a Time comparison; I watch that show, but I like Fables because it's much more realistic? I know, fairy tales aren't realistic anyways, but I like that in Fables it's more real life situations. I do like Once Upon a Time, also....it's just started to get tedious, IMO.
They are! I've also read the 2nd and 3rd volumes- they're not necessarily as much of a whodunnit, but they're still pretty great. More of a thriller.

ClaireGenevieve (badschnoodles) | 89 comments Fun fact: Once Upon a Time and Grimm were actually both made because a Fables show wasn't possible at the time. (Or, so I heard anyway.)
I read this and a few more years ago and did enjoy the series until the politics of it started to get to me.

I wondered about that. To me, Grimm is more similar to Fables. I watch both shows, I need to catch up on the current seasons. What do you mean by the politics?

ClaireGenevieve (badschnoodles) | 89 comments BW is rabidly pro-Israel, and the whole series is an allegory for that. But I also felt that there was quite a bit of racism creeping in as well.

ClaireGenevieve (badschnoodles) | 89 comments Rabidly pro-Israel is his term btw, not mine.

Hmm, I hadn't even noticed that. That sucks. :/
