I'm afraid I didn't see this same irony. Could you provide some more concrete examples of the irony you found in this book?

They are certainly self-involved individuals. As we all are. I certainly identified with the book.

I recently heard Eugenides interviewed, and I never got the impression he meant his book to be ironic.
