I Forgot the Name of That ___! discussion

What is the title of a book about anthropomorphism: I first read it about 15 years, ago. A serious [NOT scholarly], English language, USA-published, account of 19th and early 20th C culture. Salten, and maybe Disney, were discussed. I think my copy was hard-back, published ~1980s. It may have opened with the popular myth about a bird plastering its broken wing with mud.
