What does everyone think this song is about? In the context of the time then also what it would mean if created today.

I think it means the world is changing constantly and George sits playing his guitar and watches, weeping for the future. And through the song he sees people (ex. "They bought and sold you,") these are people he sees around him.
According to ,"A Hard Day's Write," by Steve Turner, Harrison was reading I Ching, the Chinese book of changes, and decided to write a song about the first words he saw, which were "Gently Weeps."

Have you read the I Ching? It's a very enlightening read, if you can get past the time warp. Many artists from the 60s seemed to have seen the same thing and now it's nearly everywhere. Though why was Claptons guitar weeping? How where they bought and sold?
I have never read I Ching, I have heard a lot about it though (being a fan of the 60's).
I'm not sure why Clapton got chosen to play the guitar in one of George's greatest songs, but because it was his song and he and Clapton were such good friends I feel that it was George's decision to use Clapton. (Maybe Clapton wrote the guitar solo and George liked it) I don't know.
And the bought and sold part, I hear it as slavery (from past events before the 60's) again I'm not sure.
Hopefully some help to your questions. (:

George lived down the street from Clapton at the time. Also, no worries, lyric is a labyrinth of overlap. Until we blow out into its view, it sees us better than we see it. And maybe more of an indirect slavery, like wage slavery? Like television networks? Like today? The influence of our minds, is bought and sold. The guitar weeps, though why? Perhaps that influence caused the strings to weep. Perhaps they still do. There are two sides to art isn't there, one that says something and the other that just entertains.
I've had a book by Rolling Stones and it's called, "The Beatles, The Ultimate Album - by - Album Guide," And I kept getting more curious to why this song was written. The book says, "Harrison's best White Album track began in the summer as an acoustic number with a touch of harmonium by McCartney. None of the other members however, could take the song seriously and Harrison couldn't settle on his guitar sound. When George asked Clapton to play the solo, Clapton couldn't resist. Also, by bringing in a new musician, this cooled out the other members."
Not much of why the song was written, or what the lyrics mean, but for the most part, I think George just wanted to show his musical skills and writing. And I think this song finally gave him the credit he deserved.

George was the young one and they always treated him that why I guess, so you're probably right. I'm sure that without the influence of the others he might not have became who he was, but it is one of my favorite tracks on that side.
It is one of the Beatles greatest songs, one that is passed over a lot. I think George really was influenced by the other three. They all dramatically were changed since the two albums before (Sgt. Pepper's and the Magical Mystery Tour,) the white album really showed their true writing abilities (without being drugged up) not that they weren't writing the White album, haha. But after this album i feel they finally were seeing their own style and differences. (One being Yoko) :P
