Orley Farm is a realist novel, which was first published in monthly shilling parts by Chapman and Hall, and illustrated by the artist John Everett Millais. Nevertheless, it did not sell well due to the more successful magazines that offered multiple story parts. Interestingly, Orley Farm was Trollope's personal favourite work. The narrative deals with the will and codicil of Joseph Mason, who leaves his wealth to an unexpected younger relative.

Elizabeth, I recently finished reading Orley Farm and enjoyed it immensely. Like Dickens, Trollope seems to relish skewering various facets of English society and life in his novels, and he went after the legal profession in this one. Unlike Dickens though, Trollope is much better at realistic characterizations though. I always enjoy becoming intimate with all of the various peoples that populate each of his novels, good and bad. As a stand-alone Trollope novel this a good read!
I'm surprised I didn't report back when I'd finished Orley Farm with a link to my review. I note that I gave it 4 stars and say that it sits at the bottom of that range. I'm prone to forget much of a book read more than year ago and so rated, yet there are Trollope-painted pictures still in my mind, so perhaps it was better than I gave it credit when I finished reading.
