Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments This satirical novel was first published in 1875 in serial format. In 1872 Trollope had returned to england and been appalled by the greed he saw, which spurred him on to write this novel. The Way We Live Now is regarded by many critics as Trollope's masterpiece. It is his longest novel, and noted for being complex in its use of subplots. The narrative was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s, and accuses the dishonesty of the age. In his autobiography, Trollope regarded this novel as 'powerful and good'.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments This was my first Trollope. I link my review. I rarely have spoilers in my reviews, and this is no exception.

LindaH | 14 comments Hi Elizabeth. I just joined this group and have hardly had a chance to explore, but since I'm currently reading TWTAN, I came right here. I guess, just to read others' enthusiasm for Trollope's insight into human psychology. His portrayal of so many hidden agendas amazes me. I find it surprisingly easy to follow the many different characters' schemes, calculations and fatal flaws and yet know/anticipate the disasters into which they are headed. If only I'd been so wise :) when I was reading Dr. Thorne in college eons ago!

Kev Ruiz (kevruiz) | 1 comments Hi group!

Finally cracked open my first ever Trollope and came searching for a related group here on GoodReads. Still a newbie on Goodreads (as a user - joined a while back to check out books only) so advance apologies if unbeknownst to me I breach some site etiquette.

After reading around for a while, I finally opted to start my Trollope journey with The Way We Live now. The themes that the book seems to carry quite appealed to my current mood and observations of the current state of Society and the World at large.

So far have read the first 100 pages in one sitting and they just breezed by. Found it easy to read with the writing flowing nicely. Already, I have developed an interest for a set of characters and situations and am pulled in for the rest of the ride.

Look forward to interacting with others on here as I continue to delve deeper into the novel - the first of Trollope's 47(?!)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments Very good, Kev. This was my first Trollope, too, and became an instant fan. Hope you continue to enjoy it. I agree that it seems very relevant.

Rachel (perks53) | 10 comments Hello Kev,
I am just about to start reading The Way We Live Now. I have finished the Pallisers series which I'm having a hard to accepting. Soon I will start rereading them. I have one book in Barchester Chronicles. Beware, one you get started on Trollope.......
