Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments This 1870 novel features the depiction of a fallen woman and Trollope wrote a preface defending his choice of subject content. The anticipated controversy never occurred and critics ignored this subplot, focussing instead on the courtship in the novel, but many were unhappy with the dark tone of the work.

The mode of publication was mismanaged by the publishers, and the novel was not serialised in a popular magazine as planned, but instead issued in monthly numbers - a form of serialisation less popular now with the reading public, and Trollope lost readers as a result.
