This novel was first published in 1863. The narrative concerns Luke Rowan, who seeks to protect his interests in the Bungall and Tappitt brewery. He meets Rachel Ray and falls in love with her, to the dismay of Mrs. Tappitt who wished him to marry one of her daughters. The comic novel is unusual of Trollope as it features a hero that works for a living.

Another quite pleasant read. My review, in which I don't comment that all of the young people take a walk every day, and the evenings are spent reading aloud to one another. Neither of these activities is observed as being unusual. What a nice life!
