Published in 1850, this is Trollope's first historical novel. The plot is set after the execution of Louis XVI, when a Royalist revolt broke out in La Vendee, a region in central France. The novel was successful and won the support, among others, of the famous novelist Horace Walpole.

Although I wouldn't go as far as say that this novel is a complete flop, historical novels certainly doesn't seem to be Trollope's forte. There are so many authors that have done it much better.I think Trollope realised this, as he never atttempted it again, to the best of my belief.
