Elizabeth (Alaska) | 214 comments Published in 1850, this is Trollope's first historical novel. The plot is set after the execution of Louis XVI, when a Royalist revolt broke out in La Vendee, a region in central France. The novel was successful and won the support, among others, of the famous novelist Horace Walpole.

David Postle | 39 comments Although I wouldn't go as far as say that this novel is a complete flop, historical novels certainly doesn't seem to be Trollope's forte. There are so many authors that have done it much better.

I think Trollope realised this, as he never atttempted it again, to the best of my belief.
