When I was little around the time that my love of reading started to develop, I used to always have this habit of coming home from a regular school day, grabbing a snack and shutting myself in my room with my books.

Usually the routine was that I'd head to my room, do my homework for the day and then I'd position a thick blanket behind my closed door and I would put a pillow against it. I'd then sit against the pillow and read for hours. Usually from around 5pm till around dinner time which was 7pmish.

A lot of the time I'd pretend I was asleep when I'd hear my siblings coming upstairs so that they wouldn't interrupt me. Now that I look back on it it was a pretty strange habit which only lasted about a month before I grew out of it.

Another habit I had was that on weekdays because I went to sleep early, and my mum had a 'thing' with getting enough sleep on school nights, I'd always assign myself 30 minutes every school night of reading before falling asleep.

On Fridays and Saturdays I would always go through my older sister's cabinet and pick a Goosebump book (which was what I was into at the time) and I would read one each night, which took me about 2 hours. So I was up pretty late on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday nights I just read about an hour before sleeping. This was also around the time when I had heaps of nightmares because of how scary Goosebumps was.

It's sort of strange, because with that habit, night-time was the only time I would read. But now, I read whenever I feel like it, I don't restrict myself, however I do prefer reading during bedtime.

What book habits did you have as a child, or during the time when your love of reading developed? They can be as absurd as mine or as simple as having a special place to read. They can be habits you had, or have. Let's get discussing!

Kristen Callihan | 2 comments Book habits:
*I can't read with the covers of my books on. Not really sure if it is because I feel like the books slides, or what.

*I also have to have a book mark (bending the pages hurts my soul!), but I don't care what bookmark it is. It could be a receipt, a business card, or a folded piece of paper. I just have to have a book mark.

*If the next book in the series is out, I usually like to have quick access to it so I can start reading immediately after I finish the book (especially if it is a cliff hanger!).

Britt (theinfernaldevice) I guess..I don't know. I dog ear my books and I always have to drink something while reading my books. I can't read otherwise..I don't know. I don't really have a habitual book place though, y'know?

Ooh .. I always do that. Wherever I am I constantly have to have a book with me. However, these days I just end up having my phone with me, and that has e-books so it's all good.

Library books never smell nice to me.

Britt (theinfernaldevice) I actually love the smell of library books. They smell..kind of musty and homey, y'know? I just love em.

message 11: by Lady Poppy (new)

Lady Poppy | 367 comments I eat or drink when I read, most of the time. I have a bad habit of biting my nails while I read... I just can't sit still, and stressful parts bring my bad habits out.

message 12: by L (new)

L | 1252 comments I love the smell of old, musty books. So much age in the pages - so much 'life'.

message 13: by Britt (new)

Britt (theinfernaldevice) I can't read a book sitting up or sitting down, I have to be curled up. And yes, that's a really nice smell, and when you can hear the pages as you turn them ^~^

Yuo're library must have nice books. My school library which is my primary source of books has books that are super outdated so generally they don't smell all that good...

BUT I LOVE THE SMELL OF NEW BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S JUST... ASFHJGKFL;

NO WORDS.

I also have a habit of neglecting real life whenever I get into a real good book so I'll just... accidentally... forget to do things...

Bugs my parents to no end. Whoops.

message 22: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (olivia1395) | 1948 comments Yeah, but I get annoyed when people keep interrupting me when I'm reading. If it's something important, okay, but most times it's just someone trying to make conversation. I hate it.

That's the worst! Also, when I'm reading in the living room and my mom tries to start a conversation with me. I get really angry.

H99 wrote: "Ugh, yes. "What book are you reading?" -asked by a stranger."

Agreed. It's even worse when they're not interested at all and when they ask you what it's about, that is really annoying because I can never for the life of me properly explain the plot of a book to someone.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Olivia wrote: "Exactly. *shows them cover and continues to read.*"

H99 wrote: "Ugh, yes. "What book are you reading?" -asked by a stranger."

... And then they'll just keep talking to you about that one book as a means to maintain the conversation when they have ZERO interest in the book. Like I'd quite happily talk if the person was actually interested but...

Olivia (olivia1395) | 1948 comments Agreed.

I have a habit of going into books blind, not knowing a single thing about it.

I recently did that with 'Ask the Passengers' by A.S King and honestly this book was such a surprise because I had no idea what would happen or what direction the plot was going in.

message 29: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (olivia1395) | 1948 comments I find it very difficult to do that. I will occasionally though.

message 30: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (olivia1395) | 1948 comments I do the same thing. I'll try harder to keep reading the book if it was recommended to me.

I have a horrid habit of folding the top corner of book pages that I loved reading. For e.g. My copy of Clockwork Princess is filled with folded corners...mainly Will Herondale scenes!!

Booknut 101 (booknut101) | 4592 comments Mod
*laughs* Trust me when I say that I never fold library books, or other people's book when I borrow them. It's just my books. And only when I really, really love a part in the book. But if it will make ease your grief, I will use paper clips from now on! <3

Changing my hair a gazillion and one times whilst I read.

Listening to music.

The music I listen to the most is this: http://youtu.be/npWSI9iu2i0

Trust me. Read anything and listen to the above tune and the story becomes 100% awesomer!

message 40: by L (new)

L | 1252 comments Listning to movie soundtracks whilst reading the book! {even if the film isn't 100% exactly as the story - - but close enough}. For instance i love listning to New Moon: The Score, whilst reading the book

Weird book habits, huh?

Okay, I always find myself:
1) Giving a book 100 pages to catch my interest. If it can't, I quit reading it. One more chance exists for that book to appeal to me before I pass it on.
2) Reading two or three books in one genre, then jumping to another.
3) Reading all of the reviews, introductions, author notes, or author biographies before starting the book.
4) Never stopping in the middle of a page. I always have to read to either a chapter end, a break in the text, or a page that ends in a period.
5) Alphabetizing my bookshelves and sorting them into genre.
6) Always avoiding reading a book out of order in a series, even if they are not remotely connected, and just have a common character.

message 43: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy (stairstepjitters) | 62 comments I sniff my books and always read everything in the book on first read (including copyrights, acknowledgements, dedication, author's note, everything) but my biggest and possibly worst book habit is that I write in the margin of everything. No one ever wants to lend me books because I have to almost duct-tape my fingers together to prevent myself from writing in the margin. They're often little notes to myself, theories about what will happen later in the book, or just general commentary. My copy of the Hobbit no longer has any space in the margins at all, on any page. I've tried abstaining from it but it's a lost cause.

L | 1252 comments Curious bookish habits.. of a nerd!

* I find reading in bed relaxing! ~

a moment to just chill out! I think most during sleep {or just before} with many multitudinous musings swirling around in my head.

* I love the smell of books?! ~

That musty, homely smell of archaic, leather-bound volumes.. pummelling the senses as though you've strolled into a quaint bookstore.

I was read many stories to as a young'un, {usually before bed} hence why I get a nostalgic feeling inside.. comforting!

* I love this Quote..

"To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.”
— W. Somerset Maugham

Reading is an escape from reality, as synonymously a form of realistic perspective!
For, I truly believe that anything containing no depth to it, is like a body without a soul.

* Coffee and early morning reading are synergistically fated!

.. Challenging hypothesis' can only be acquired when fully awake.

For the curious folk, in possession of limited time, one must make peace with incomplete knowledge.

For instance -

You will never read everything!! Dan Kennedy, associate professor of journalism at North-eastern University, notes that he tries to read The Boston Globe and The New York Times daily as part of teaching his students..
But to get all the way through both, he just didn't have time!

So don’t try. Instead, figure out roughly how much time you’re willing to devote daily to staying informed..

Hey, don't get bogged down with wordage!

So, in short..

Oftentimes normalcy is found during moments of tranquillity. Period.

So don't overthink, ease off the heavy and just enjoy reading!
