Hello, I'm Cliff.

Both my parents are aspiring writers, so that tells you something about me. I've always been into visual art and writing, but I can't actually make myself devote enough time to a craft like that unless I have some reasonable expectation of making it pay eventually. That comes from growing up poor with a severely autistic brother, I think. I've always had a strong sense of urgency and duty. I've daydreamed of being a hobo or moving to a hippie commune, but that's never been an option since I have to get rich to save my brother from his terrible institutionalized life. So I'm a JavaScript developer... for now.

Anyway, back to my work! I finally got serious about writing only a few years ago after watching a documentary about Philip K. Dick. I decided to read all his books, write my own, and make a career of it. 2/3 done. My first daughter was eight or nine when I started writing Adelaide in Ozghard (a sort of Oz/Wonderland reimagining with distinct notes of Tolkien, PKD, and Lovecraft). That one won a Watty ("Hidden Gems") while it was still just "Book 1", before I'd written the sequel that I later reanalyzed as the second half of a single novel. I thought I was writing middle grade at first (and I still try to keep things fairly clean), but I gradually came to decide that since I write for childlike adults and precocious children, my best bet is to just call it "adult". (Still not 100% set on that though. I need an agent to help figure out this marketing stuff.)

Anyway, what I'm writing now (Two-Headed Lamb) definitely feels more "adult" to me, but the main characters are again young, so who knows how to sell it? (Seriously, any tips on finding a good agent would be much appreciated.)

With my writing, I let myself get pretty out-there in terms of esoteric spiritual/magical stuff. I feel like my worldview lines up with PKD pretty well, so everything comes out a bit dark and paranoid whether I intend it that way or not. But... and this is key... at the core of all that is love and optimism and empathy. I take no pleasure in the nastiness of the world, only in fighting to make it better, that Sisyphean task.

I only recently discovered "dreampunk" as a genre when I was asked to write a description for it on Wattpad. Once I looked into it, it clicked that all the fiction that's really stuck with me and hit closest to my heart over the years has been pretty much "dreampunk". I use elements from my dreams whenever possible in my writing, and I keep coming back to the idea of layers of false realities obscuring unknowable truths.
