The Lost are dead, for starters. However, unlike most dead people, they are allowed to be in the human world. They seem like a regular person. However, they have a job to do that allows them to stay in the mortal world. Their is a Lost Council. This Council tells them when they have a job to do. What is the job of the Lost? Well, its their job to harvest souls when the Council tells them to. To take an innocent life and capture the soul inside of it by putting the soul in an object that was of value to the person who they took the soul from, then take it back to the Council for judgment of the reaped soul. Each Lost has a Gift. Some can see the future, others can read minds. Their Gift is trapped inside their significant object. It's what makes them seem human. Without their Gift, they would slowly begin to fade away into nothingness.
