Pru was waiting in the waiting room, she was due for a MRI again. She hated it but it had to be done. As she waited she watched all the patients moving about and the staff going from one job to the next. She sighed and began reading a pamphlet about the new children's wing at the hospital, her grandfather had been one of the contributors and would be giving a speech at the opening event.
Ember quietly walked into the hospital. The smell of disinfectant hit her like a brick wall. It was the smell she had learned to so strongly associate with death. There was so many poor souls here, basically just sitting around, waiting for their time to run out.
Pru was almost up. Just a little old lady needing an x-ray of her ankle and then it was her turn. She despised being there but her grandfather made her come. She didn't know why they even bothered. The possibility of finding a match was practically zero. She would much rather be outside and living her life then being cooped up in her room or here. Live and see the world while she still could. She shifted in her seat, bored. Her long hair rippling with the movement, she was lucky, her hair had never fallen out or thinned like some people's hair did. But she still got sick from the treatment. She was in fact feeling nauseous right then but she didn't need to go to the bathroom, after five years she had almost grown immune, or knowing at least when it really was necessary. She looked about, wondering how much longer.
Ember casually strolled around a bit, looking at everything on the walls, she wasn't in a hurry. She always took her time with these things. She usually liked to get to know the person a bit first, at least then she wouldn't be stuck wondering who they were.
Finally it was Pru's turn. The old lady's ankle was broken and she needed a cast. A glorious hour later she emerged, finally done. She talked with one of the nurses who knew her well and arranged to pick up the images and results later. She couldn't stand being there any longer. Dressed in a snug pair of blue jeans and soft winter boots with a long sleeved white button shirt hidden under a giant grey sweater she wheeled herself out of the waiting room, making her way down the hall.
Ember picked up a pamphlet and looked through it. She wondered how much supervision was around and how much she would have to dodge later. She sighed and flipped through the pages.
Pru was wheeling by someone and noticed she was flipping through a pamphlet. She stopped, noticing it was about the new children's wing. Curious a bit and utterly bored she stopped by the girl and asked softly, "Are you going to the charity fund raiser for the opening event? Sorry, it's just not a lot of young people bother reading the pamphlets around here."
Ember glanced up, she hadn't expected anyone talking to her, "...oh, theres a fundraiser tomorrow?" She asked "...guess i didn't get that far yet...."
Pru gave a small smile. "Yeah, I don't know why they put it at the back. So are you new in town? I haven't seen you here before. Oh I'm Prudence Gianna Willows, but everyone calls me Pru, it's nice to meet you." Pru held out her hand as she said this.
Ember gave a small smile, setting the pamphlet back in its place, "...yeah, i just moved here a few days ago...my names Isabel." She answered, lying easily as she remembered the name the council had given her to go by. She shook the girls hand carefully.
Pru's handshake wasn't very strong, she just couldn't manage it. She returned her hand and gave another small smile. "Well welcome then! Hope you enjoy living here, it's a small town but it's got a great feeling to it. Oh and it's nice to make your acquaintance! Sorry, concentrating doesn't come easily now a days. So what brings you by the hospital? Are you going to volunteer or?"
Ember smiled a bit, this was the part where her past helped her out a bit, there was still a few places on her arm that had never healed correctly.it didn't bother her, if anything it made her job easier when dealing with hospitals. "...oh, no, I'm just here so they can check to make sure my burns are healing correctly.." She answered, shrugging casually.
Pru looked concerned, in a gentle voice she said, "Oh, well you've come to the right place, they have an excellent burn's unit. So, how do you like the town so far?" Pru didn't want to ask her about how she got burned. It was none of her business and she figured that if Isabel wanted to tell her she would have. So she made polite small talk instead.
Ember shrugged, "...its great so far...though i haven't been around most of it." She said, basically going off the truth now.
Pru smiled, "Well I'm glad you like it so far, trust me it'll only get better. Oh look at the time!" Pru was looking up at a clock displayed on the wall, she shook her head and looked at Isabel apologetically, "I'm sorry but I must go, my grandfather is waiting for me, it was nice to meet you Isabel, perhaps we'll run into each other again some time, goodbye." And with that Pru smiled and wheeled past her. It was true though, her grandfather was waiting for her as it was already lunch time. She did wonder however if she would see Isabel again but figured if she had burns, burns needed to be checked regularly so she was sure she would see her around again.
