Joshua S Hill (joshuashill) Hey Folks,

So, the end of the year finally gave me some space to get up over the 60 books read for the year, with Michael J Sullivan's Riyria trilogy, Anthony Ryan's Blood Song, and Miles Cameron's The Red Knight.

Collectively, they have a great medieval feel, strong characters that you love or hate, and a great overarching plot.

Can anyone recommend something that is similar to these?

Scott (dodger1379) | 139 comments Love Riyria - to me it was like a breath of fresh air (so tired of grim dark and the like). I also am looking for recommendations like Riyria meaning great characters, great plot, moves quickly AND doesn't take 1000 pages to tell a story.

I'd recommend "The Gentlemen Bastard" series which starts with The Lies of Locke Lamora.

There are some similarities. Both series involve fun, loveable rogues who make their living on the wrong side of the law.

100% agree. When I read Riryia, I thought it was very similar to Gentlemen Bastards.

Additionally, there are a couple of Riryia prequels, The Crown Tower and The Rose and the Thorn. I'm not normally a prequel fan, but these were fantastic.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 1081 comments Many people sees Riryia as in the tradition of the subgenere of "Buddy Fantasy", which began with Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser characters in Swords and Deviltry.

Also I think the Mistborn in between novel: The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson would also fit.
