Lena dropped to one knee and laced up her trainers. She smiled up at Eowyn, her partner (although Eowyn was a MapMaker and she a Runner, they made a great team). Lena's job was to run fast and protect the Glade from Grievers and look for a way out, whereas Eowyn's was to map the Maze. Lena didn't envy her. She hated sitting still. Drawing out the maps took hours at a time.
"You ready?" Lena fingered her sword as she stood up, and felt the weight of her bow across her back. It was always better to be safe than sorry, she reminded herself, as the deadweight of her quiver settled over her shoulders. But she was strong, and very used to it.

Lena grumbled, "I don't see why we're looking for STICK anyway. I mean, we've all wanted to toss him into the maze at some point or another. Especially today, huh, Eowyn?"
"Little squirt," Lena sighed, dropping into a crouch and inspecting the grieved slime on the ground. "An hour, maybe two hours old. The grieved will be well away now."
"EVIL little squirt" said Eowyn, correcting Lena. She dropped into a crouch alongside Lena and took a look at the ground for signs of footprints.
Lena smiled grimly. "It's not over yet. Ok, MapMaker. I'll cover for you. You direct us to the griever hole and back, and watch for stick."
((His name doesn't even deserve capitalisation lol))
Lena unsheathed her sword and took off running.

Eowyn nodded and started walking as silently as possible into the maze using her knowledge gained by making maps.
Lena beckoned for her to hurry as her heightened, practiced runner senses picked up in a faint whirring. Lena focused. Her senses were remarkable, which is part of the reason why she was Keeper of the runners.
"Griever ten minutes or so to the left." Then she imitated a satnav. "Recalculating," she teased. "The walking map is thinking..."

Then Lena heard something crackle behind her and saw the telltale glint of a griever. Her instincts kicked in and she bolted, screaming a warning to Eowyn.
Lena stepped into the cool shadow of the maze, listening to the footsteps of the other runners echoing of the walls. There were only a few up this early and in the maze--a few dedicated runners who actually wanted to get out of the Glade. Lena sighed. Sometimes she doubted that there was a way out. But she was a runner, it was her job to hope.
She leaned over and tied her shoe, before adjusting the straps keeping her two long hunting knives tied to her back. Then she straightened, turning on the spot, pondering which direction to run in today. Should she go left or right? Straight or not? It's not like it mattered. The maze changed over night. There was no way for her to repeat any route two days in a row.
