2014 Series Challenge - General Discussion
Ok, here's what I'm seeing as I finish browsing through everyone's list thread.Gods! You people have issues. LOL
I definitely see that this challenge is what the doctors ordered. Not sure how the setup will do, but it looks like we all definitely need it.
LOL! I was inspired by Kathy, Emily & Becky to figure out my "numbers".Since keeping track of my reading, I've started 36 series, completed 6 of them and have 68 "new to me" series I'd like to try. As I stated in another thread, I could be doing this challenge for years.
I'm really excited to get started. I already know I'll have to remind myself to take my time and not be "consumed" by this challenge. I would love to be active in the group reads here as well. Of course, that will probably lead to more series to my TBR.
Which brings me to something I hadn't thought of, but I will address that in the Q&A thread.
I like making lists... now actually following them... weeelll... that might be a problem. And I have a feeling for every series I finish two more will take its place.
Man, seriously I need an intervention. I know there are even more I didn't list!! And all of your pretty lists are adding even more to my pile that I now need to earn credits for. Hmph. :)
I have to admit......I have cut some series out of the list I complied.
Cause there are much too many to list in public.

I just realized I forgot a few...
So I've actually started 40 series, completed 6, and abandoned 4.
Oh my.I started playing around with my series list on BC the other day.

It's sad when you have to maintain your series database, lol. There are so many that I stopped counting.

Same. But mostly ones that I don't really intend to get back to this year. Like Sookie Stackhouse. I was kind of bored by the second book so I'm really in no hurry. If I add it to my list then it will begin to bug my inner completist and I'll have to prioritise it over better things and... that way lies madness.
As if I'm not already mad as a hatter. Look at that damn list.

I haven't counted in my romance and young adult series, if I did my number would be a lot higher. I might add them at a later date but for now I want to concentrate on fantasy. I tend to read the first book, like it, buy the second, and never read it. Or by the time I read it I don't remember the first one.

I only follow a few romance series that I actually follow. The rest are pick up when ever I do.
OMG! I didn't realize just how bad I am w/ my series! I am currently in the middle of 20 series and re-reading 2 series. And I have 11 new series that I would like to start and 3 series that I would like to re-read at some time. And that is even after I very recently finished 3 series! :)
That's it. I'm officially nuts.Another group I'm in has a new challenge, where you pick a series and read one book/month until you're done.
Guess what I signed up for?

One book a month? But.. but... the next book is already out... *twitch*
Discworld's a great choice though! :)
Discworld's a great choice though! :)
I completely forgot about Discworld when I was making my challenge list... No... Nope... Not. Going. To. Even. Think. It.
I think you could easily read two Discworld books in a month without burning out. Of course, I'm a bit biased - but aside from the fact that they're generally good reads, they're not exactly bricks, either.
I'll probably try for 2, just because I don't want to be working on the series for the next decade. LOL
One thing I have been wondering about is those series that you may want to read....but don't feel a rush to. Like, for example, I read the first Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child. Sure, I would like to read the series, but am in no hurry and wouldn't be upset if I didn't read them all. I'm not sure if I should remove that from my list or what? Hmmm??? Anyone have similar problems/questions?
Kathy - I know I'm not participating but, if I were, I would focus on listing the series I definitely want to get to this year, and leave the others aside for now.
Or, at least, list them at the bottom in a separate category.
Ditto Colleen & Chris.First, I put the more realistic choices at the top (sticking with mostly MG & YA because the seem to be "lighter" and by that nature "shorter"), then I listed others I'd like to read, as a 2nd tier, then all of the rest, just incase ...
I put in all of my unfinished series except for a couple I have little interest in getting back to any time soon, if at all, but that was mostly to remind myself what's incomplete and that I won't pay any credits if I go back to it. I might split it down further but I'm not sure... that takes planning, and I don't plan my reading much in advance anymore.
I'm not counting points. I was going to but decided on the last day not to. It wouldn't have worked for me personally but I love the challenge itself and am still going to follow it. Just in a unofficial capacity. As for my list, I kept playing with it but I think I'm finally happy with it. I'm thinking of it as a sort of "bucket list" for reading. I didn't put every series, only the ones I *want* to finish. Although I may add more later.
That's fine, Nienna. And I consider your list just as "official" as the others. Points are optional.
Uh Oh. Due to my own personal challenge rules: *Every 250 points equals one new book purchase/acquisition.
(Series challenge books are exempt, and can be purchased/acquired at any point in order to complete the series.)
I may not be able to purchase the 2 Group Read books I'd like to read in February....Would it be cheaty to make them exempt as well?
And I still don't know what to do about Abandoned Series.
Since the general rules have group books as exemptions, I don't see how it would be cheaty to alter your rules along the same lines.

True. Fair enough. Thanks. :)
Agree with Colleen. Not cheety. As for Abandoneds, I don't see getting a completion bonus on an incomplete series.
Though as I alluded to before (I think), you might give yourself a "give up the ghost/it just isn't worth it" bonus for breaking your ocd trends and just walking away.
If quitting shitty books is a bigger issue for you than compulsive series starting, by all means reward yourself for not torturing yourself.

It is an issue, actually (How did you know? :) )
My concern about the points, though, is what if we don't know tht final size of the series? or Barring points, how do we otherwise indicate an abandoned series, so that we are not penalized for starting a new one?
Because I have the same issue lol..For final size, I'd just go by how many books as of 2014.
You could always make a separate list for abandoneds.
I'm not using the point system myself but in regards to abandoned series I would score them by:1. How long is the series?
2. How many did I get through?
If I read the first book in a 3 book series and decided not to continue I would feel like it was cheating to award finished points, or half finished points. But if I was reading a 10 book series and I made it half way I would feel as though I earned those half points.
But that's just how I would do it, if I was doing it.
That makes sense, Nienna.I don't personally worry about abandoned series too much. If I bail, I just forget about them. Either I will change my mind one day and finish, or I won't.
Fionavar, I'm looking at you.

Completing a trilogy is only worth 20 points, so if you read one and abandon it you'd receive 10 points. This is the same amount you would receive for reading any one book in a series, anyway. I'm okay with that.

I doubt many in the challenge would give up after one book anyway. :)
Confusion on scoring. Can someone clarify? Here's my Jan reads so far. I'm counting Diskworld as a series book because it is part of another challenge.
The Shining is a reread (haven't read it in 20 years). I'm doing a 2 book a month challenge. Do I count the reread of the shining as completing another 50 +10 or just a +10? Also, I presume novellas and short stories are the same thing for this challenge. Anyway, this is either 162 or 122 (I think).
*Finished book 8 (Celebrity in Death) In Death series
*Finished book 1 (Color of Magic) Diskworld
*Finished book 2 (Philly Stakes) Amanda Pepper series
*Finished The Shining (part 1 of 2 book series)
Finished Standalone (Falling Free) Vorkosigan saga +10
Finished Novella (Antiques Slay Ride) Trash n Treasures +2
You'd earn the monthly goal once you've reached it each month, unless you wanted to count your February goal in now too. That's up to you.I'm actually seeing 102 there unless you are completing a series/subseries or starting a subseries somewhere in there. Reviews will count 25 if you have them too.
