What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I've been looking for this book for a long time. It is about a boy who does odd jobs around this small town in order to buy parts to build/fix this old Army truck. Book was possibly in or around the 1950s. I'm sorry but that is all the information I can provide on it. Thank you in advance for any and all help you can give....

I am trying to find this book for a friend of mine. He remembers reading it as a child in the 1950s. I am not sure what era the book was set in. I believe that the book was targeted towards children/pre-teens.
I am sorry I wasn't clear on the year.

The date is later, but the book sounds right. Can't always believe the date anyway...

So I ran that title by my friend and he says that it isn't it. He says the book centered around one boy and that it was an old Army truck, a deuce and a half, not a jeep. He also says that he is sure the book was written sometime in the 1920s-1940s.
He says that particular title sounds like a good read though!

I just showed it to him and he flipped out! This is the book that he has been looking for all these years! I wanted to get it on Amazon and surprise him but...it goes for $123. :-/

Thank you but I found one for $6 on ebay and it includes five other stories. Better than nothing. :)
