I was incredibly angry. Wendy was a total hypocrite in this book. Finn came to her with a ring and offered her one night of love before the wedding, but she throws it in his face and gets pissy, but she offers Loki just one night after the wedding and pretends it's somehow different? I hated this book. Even though Tove was gay, she still made a commitment to him, and wasn't he sick in the next room while they were having sex? It's been so long since I read these and to be honest, I skimmed quite a bit of it.

This part pissed me off the most, honestly. I have a mental illness, and I grew up around it, and I have an HFA best friend (which I know isn't the same as a mental illness, but the symptoms can cause issues at times with sensory processing/social interactions/cognitive ability). How the story treated Tove was disgusting.

First off, I'm not trying to say that it was no big deal that Tove had an attack and wound up hurting Wendy in a delusion. That's not a good thing at all, and in real life, it would call for some severe intervention.

My problem comes from the fact that if the book was actually worth the paper it was printed on, there would have been a severe intervention, and they would have looked for ways to help him. Everyone in the story KNEW that that wasn't Tove attacking Wendy to be an abusive husband, and that it was his brain not working right and thinking that he was being attacked. How Loki attempted to demonize Tove for it to get Wendy to sleep with him was a total dick move.

And honestly? It seemed like that was the point the book was trying to make. That it was okay that Wendy cheated on Tove for Loki, because Tove is an unfit husband for her because he is mentally ill and hurt her in an attack, which the not-mentally-ill Loki would never do. Gag me. (And then he wound up with someone else with still no help (actually implied to get even worse) at the end of the series anyway, so just what the hell am I supposed to take from this? That it's okay that he could potentially harm another lover during an attack as long as it's not Wendy? Gimme a break.)

It's just, the way that he was just cast aside after Wendy got what she wanted was really gross. There was no, "Look, Tove, there's gotta be something somewhere that can help you. Your situation sucks, so I'm gonna use all my princess resources to find you something to help." Just, "Thank Heavens you're crazy so we have a reason for an annulment and I can chase after Loki! Sucks you're gonna die! Good luck with that!" Uh, no. You DON'T just leave something like that. There was no way in hell that he was the only troll in all of troll history to have that problem, and someone somewhere must have had some kind of tool or ability to help. And even if it turned out that there really was nothing they could do for him, the fact that they just left him to have his brain deteriorate and die without any trace of lifting even a finger to find a solution or help was just obscene.

Look, I'm really tired right now, so it might not be the most coherent, but the short of it is, I REALLY hated how they used Tove's mental state in a cheap "why they can't be together" gimmick/reasoning, and then dropped that plot thread like a hot tamale when it stopped being "convenient". What a load of bull. ...more
