I've only read part of the first book so far, so I'm guessing (based on the created charries so far) characters are named after famous scientist and biologist or something? Or is this just a coincidence? I really need to finish the trilogy... :/

You are not wrong. Non only scientist and biologist but also musician, like Zart. For some characters, like Minho, the author said he is based on someone who will be famous in the future and didn't exist yet. Quite creepy, but that's what he said.

Okay, so when exactly is this all taking place? At the time when Thomas arrived in Glade A or when the first gladers arrived? Or some other time?
